Test drove an R8 V8 on saturday asa possible replacement for mine which will be going anytime soon, and thought I would post up my feedback and see if anyone else had tried one to compare ?

To be honest I was really excited but left feeling a bit flat !

Good bits - felt like a proper supercar getting in, looked good, REALLY easy to drive/handled great, more toys to play with inside compared to mine..

Bad bits

Felt a bit muted compared to the 997 with PSE engaged and the 997 felt surprisingly quicker and sharper - despite being 65bhp down ! Interior was also very underwhelming (think posh TT). I think its generally a good looking car but it does look a bit awkward from some angles.

Really made me appreciate my 911 more - both for the above reasons and tthe fact that its far more practical. Being a part of the Porsche scene feels special. But when all is said and done, an R8 is 'just' and Audi (ironically I dont generally like Audis!).

Next stop AMV8 but I cant see that being as much fun to drive either really....hmmm.

Anyone else tried one - seems like a natural progression for many 911 owners from what I've heard ?

That almost exactly mirrors my experience back when I was looking to trade out of my 997 C2S. I ended up with a GT3 though. The R8 was very nice but just felt a bit flat compared to the Carrera. I could see myself getting one in the future, but it would be additional to not instead of a 911.

R8 v8 are excellent cars. However engine do need a good check up as they suffer from vacum problems and carbon build up in the intake due to the FSI system. With those problems they will feel very sluggish and will be juicy.
With a Milltek system an intake clean and remap they are absolutly awesome.
Engine is bullet proof , some tuning companies fit superchargers ( TTS is the best kit) on stock engine and power is close 600bhp.....no problem at all.
They are good cars . The specialist for those cars is in no douts MRCtuning in Banbury who maintain them and tune them. If I may say Audi main dealer in UK do not know them very well.........fact.
Really good move. :thumb:

Hi there, all same comments as you guys , I owned one for a year before getting my 997 GT2. I loved the car to bits but there was never a true spark. I had previously owned the b7 RS4 with the same V8 , had MRC carbon clean miltek etc etc and honestly thought that that was a better car than the R8. The R8 does Looks great but just not enough go for me and like you was expecting a better car :)

Had an Audi R8 V8 for 5 years at the same time as my first 997.2.

Both sat side-by-side in the garage. The first reaction of everyone who went into the garage, was to go over to the R8 and say how wonderful it looked. The Porsche was always the not-so-pretty sister. And I guess, visually, that was my attitude too.

However, once in the car, a completely different story. The Porsche was the slightly dowdy sister who went a bit, a bit further and a then a bit further still!!! And after all that, she came back and demanded a bit more!! :puh:

Dynamically, never felt the confidence in the R8 that I did in the 997.2. Steering not as precise and ride was indifferent on some surfaces. Even with all wheel drive, often had the Audi's rear end step out unexpectedly.

Also had various niggles on the R8 which Audi failed to resolve on a number of visits. The back-up service from Audi varied from average to disappointing. They have potentially a wonderful product, but just do not have the ability (or desire) to support the car or its driver in a suitable manner. Having spent £95K on the car, might as well have bought a second-hand A1 in terms of the dealership. Porsche ownership in this respect has been a revelation on how to deliver real customer satisfaction.

So in summary, the R8 may be seen as fur coat but with granny pants underneath, whereas the Porsche is the apparently restrained librarian with mohair sweater and Victoria's Secret's thong - no competition really.

On a slight different note. My friend had a 996 coupe and won a Gallardo on spot the ball at the airport.

He's had it now for nearly 10 years, but still says he preferred his 996.

He's an ex rally driver and moto-cross + mechanic so knows a thing or two about driving.

Has anybody on here had any experience on the 5.2 V10 R8

I will be changing this Summer and i fancied going back to Ferrari with a black F430 but i always wanted an R8 the 4.2 V8 will not tick the boxes after my 997TT so im looking at the 5.2 V10 (the convertible looks stunning in my humble opinion) the money on the Coupe's is becoming realistic but im not sure if it will be WOW!!!! as previously said is it just a big TT.

Gallardo would be nice but the reliability stories from people that own them is mental hence they all have 7+ Owners

J

All he's had with his Gallardo are services and tyres. With regards to reliability he says it's amazing and also to look at, but just doesn't enjoy the drive.

Haven't driven a R8 nor a Gallardo but if given the choice of ONLY between these 2 cars there is simply no question it would be the bull that would be taken home, every time - no matter what kind of objective or subjective argument you could possibly cobble together you are only fooling yourself - it has to be the lambo...end of :hand:

I think the Audi's are still overpriced - they seem to have held their money quite well imo.

Forget the AMV8 - one of the worst cars I've ever owned - inferior to the 996 it replaced in every area bar looks.

Have also driven the R8 V10 - dynamically, I did not feel it was as well balanced to drive as the V8.

With the R-tronic automated manual gearbox, it was pure pants!

With the newer S-tronic dual clutch, the V10 is considerably improved but still does not have the sheer oomph of the 997TT.

Interior-wise, as you say, really just an Audi TT. :x

As I said in my earlier post, the Porsche remains the librarian in mohair sweater and Victoria's Secret's thong!! The one to go for every time.

R8 V10 And Gallardo do have the same engine.

Lee (Sambalee) has just swapped his F360 and 996 for a Gallardo to pair with his other Lambo :thumb: :worship:

Of the choices mentioned, it would have to be the F430.
After that the Gallardo.

Audi? No contest! The Italian Stallion and the Italian Bull win it every time as far as I'm concerned. Between the two Italian Masters, for me it would be the F430. You are buying a Ferrari after all, that racing heritage and pedigree.
The Gallardo? You are buying a (very nice) Audi engine in a Lambo body. Different altogether.

Don't get too exited with Ferrari's .....A lot of parts are shared the Fiat cars!!
Door locks system as an example....and others !

I rather to have audi parts !
