Viewing my first 997 tonight

It's shown as not having being taxed since December 2016.
I would want a PPI done, together with an independent boroscope.
I almost got burned by an immaculate looking 997.2
The inspection revealed over 8k of work to get it to where it should be.On top of that was a repaired rear quarter panel, the repair being invisible from the outside
That was on a full Porsche service history car with one previous owner.

Thanks guys, perhaps I give this one a miss...

For reference, reg is GN05 OPU.

The right car is out there for you, it's just a matter of time until the right one rears it's head.
Best of luck in your search. If you post your preference, someone may point you in the right direction :D

its such a minefield, i still get annoyed at myself when i bought my 996, the dealer span me the early line of, 'this is my own personal car' because he knew there were a couple of big bills coming, and they duly came, of course it was bs to avoid warranty, i was besotted by the car which is a fatal state to be in, the log book dident show his name, it was just a ruse he uses all the time,

my advice, if in doubt.....don't

cars that are decent don't need stories, and rarely hang around.

i reckon the best buys are private from long term owners.

Ben your in the right place! Listen to these guys it will save you thousands!

When I bought my first 911 I stupidly thought it's a Porsche it must be perfect bullet proof. They are like any other car and have faults/problems. But buy the right one and you would be hard pressed to find a better car of its type for the money.
It's a good time to buy so take your time!
Must haves!!! Service record unbroken, walk away if it's not got a full set of service records!
I've had 2 tips one a 968 other a 997 turbo and 2 manuals 996 and 997 I loved them all! Most guys on here will say manual but you need to drive them to really know what best for you!
We all love to spend other people money on here, look at the excitement you created a virgin 911 wannabe :floor: these guys will help and before long you will be in one of Porsche best creations 997! Good luck

PORSCHE on the rear looks like the lettering from a 991. Would say to me that it's had damage and someone has put a different badge on it for some reason.

I would run a mile from this car.

Please go and try a manual 3.8. Unless you really really want a tiptronic, manuals are much better. Also tip box is worse for bore scoring because the car likes to pull away in 2nd gear.

As lots of other people say, be patient!

Thanks guys, very much appreciated!

I am patient, so will wait for the right car.

I will try to test drive a 3.8 Manual.

There's a tidy looking 05 997 with a Rebuild that has just gone up on Autotrader ... may be worth a look?

Hold on

Hi,
Just 2 thoughts.....
Why don't you put the purchase on ice for another 12 months and increase your budget to mitigate some of the risk ?
The Guys on here are so knowledgable & helpful but maybe sometimes the answer is.... at this price point there is too much risk.

I faffed around for ages when I was trying to buy my Elise, each delay meant I was able to up the budget another couple of thousand and allowed me to read up a little more.
In the end I was able to calculate my 'sweet spot' for a purchase, also I felt like the money wasn't burning a hole in my pocket, the car I bought was perfect for me and it's gone up in value ( pleasantly surprised )

2nd thought....
Speculate to accumulate
Get a short term loan to increase your budget, thus allowing you into the market now rather than in 12/18 months time.
If you feel you know your 'sweet spot' go for it, the extra you will spend you will reap back in lower bills and maybe some appreciation :D

When I bought my Turbo I was fortunate enough to be sat on a Pension settlement so the Guys talked me to the right spec for me
But my Lotus was completely different, that money was my last 3 years bonuses and savings so it had to be spot on !

Either way Good Luck.... It's a nice headache to have 8)

:yeah:

I've been caught out on a car about 10 years ago, it is painful and you feel a right t1t! . Just stay put and keep looking. Good ones do come up, defo look privately as well, especially at your price point. If you're ready to move quick then I'm sure something will come along. Drive plenty in the meantime so you know exactly what you want and then you can pounce on something when it comes up.

And at this age get an inspection - in fact get an inspection period!

If you doubt anything then walk, there will ALWAYS be another car. Good luck with the search.

@Main Force Patrol - Sound advice.

Thanks to everyone for your views and comments.

One thing I will add, dealing with Vas Vehicle Solutions has been very easy and the staff are very knowledgeable. At no point have they put me under any pressure and would happily recommend speaking to them. They have over 80 used Lambos and the Porsche was a trade in for one.

The 3.8S you've posted a link to is fitted with at least one Saferich Tyre. While budget tyres have their place, I would suggest the front of a 911 demonstrates a seller who was willing to skimp on maintenance.

Ahh yes, Saferich Ditchfinders!

Reminds me of a few years ago I had a puncture and replaced the rears on my C4S. Despite being well worn I repaired the puncture and stuck them on fleabay (the repaired one at £5 less) thinking it may help someone on a tight budget. I was contacted by a someone who desperately wanted the cheaper tyre. He arrived in a Boxster displaying trade plates, shoved the tyre on the passenger seat and proceeded to tell me it's for a 996 Turbo they have for sale. I said "surely you want the non-puncture-repaired one then?" and he just said "no, it'll be fine". They still advertise as a "prestige" Porsche specialist and I cringe every time I see their ads!
