Review: Porsche PSE Refurb with Cat exchange

gilessav said:
So i took the plunge and bought the boxes for £725, my man maths assures me that worst case i'll have a few more years of PSE and best case my current boxes will be repairable and i can make some of this back in the future

More pictures of the exhausts confirm a decent condition and repair was via a specialist exhaust company adding confidence.

Seems these don't come to the market that often so did not want to pass up and others seem to be flogging them at more like this price for a single box, will report back in a few weeks once fitted :thumb:

Nice one. You don't seem them too often so you should have lots of options. Might weren't so bad but once off the car a little more corrosion was obvious. I wasn't aware the the sticky flap. Much like you I had kept the car garaged and the boxes hadn't got much (if any) worse over that period so it was a job I kept putting off. Got peeved when OPC Swindon did a service and remarked the exhaust was 'broken'. I pointed out to be broken it needed to not be working (which is was) but then again I guess they wanted to sell me a lovely new one for £££. Tech that did the service was very complimentary other than that, said he saw quite a few terrible condition 996's over the years but less and less go to OPC's these days.

Morning all,

So the exhausts arrived and look to be in pretty decent condition.

actuators all look solid, one has been replaced as welded in place as nuts must have corroded away previously, but work smoothly; will throw some WD40 in there for good measure.

Seam welds all look decent and very little evidence of any rust rattling around inside the mufflers and certainly nothing is loose.

The is one small surface fissure/crack on one muffler (not rust), not on any seam but the main body of the muffler. Does not look to be a major issue, but have ordered some of the JB-Weld extreme temperature paste to cover this over. I could ask my Indy I guess to repair with some form of surface metal solder etc, but perhaps more risky on the body of the muffler.

Hopefully this 'cold weld' will cover and protect going forward unless people tell me its pointless. I've seen reviews that it struggles on things like exhaust header cracks as they expand and are an obvious stress point of the metal, don't think this will be the case here so worth a try.

Will report back when on the car, interested to see if the sound is any different from my current PSE with a stuck actuator (no idea if stuck in open or closed).

Cheers,

Giles.

Interested to see close up pics of the repaired PSE I too am in Oxfordshire and have some rusty seamed ones looking for repair

That's corrosion imho. They've been well cleaned up with a wire brush. Probably doesn't matter, they're double skinned. Worth a try with the JB weld stuff and maybe some high temp paint (although I painted my seams after they were welded and it flaked off in days).
They look like a good buy - well done.

Looks like it's only need some light repairs/welds to existing seams.

Mine, like the OP's photos, ideally need new seams crimping on the lower half.

Thanks guys, yes agree could just be some surface corrosion but will treat with rust preventer and then use the JBWeld as it looks to work well on these areas which are not under stress or major expansion; seems to struggle (understandably to me) on manifolds or larger cracks.

The seams are note quite as neat as the OP's ones but all look well sealed now and they look to have done a decent job, tough so show easily on the photos's.

If I get another 3-5 years out of these then a bargain in my mind and may be able to offset some costs if mine are repairable, or indeed keep as a back up set.

Man maths told me not to pass these up as they don't seem to come to market too often, at a decent price, and can't see new ones dropping from their 3.6K

Have listened to lots of exhaust clips and some sound good but not quite to my ears to the depth/richness of the original PSE, all subjective of course :thumb:

Good work :thumb:

Was the Indy a decent outfit in general ?

Think OP Indy is at top of the thread, I'm still to have all my various work done in a couple of weeks, but use Wrightune near me, who have always looked after my P cars and are excellent.

Boxes were bought already repaired and the seller used Flowtech exhausts in Essex for the repair. My plan will be to get my PSE removed and then get someone such as the Milton Keynes based guy to repair them if realistic and either keep for the future or sell to offset costs.
