Driver window went bang, no longer works.

Last night as I started to open my driver side window down I heard a banging noise and now the window doesn't go up and down using the button. The motor still does something as I can hear it rotating albeit with a slight knocking noise.

The window itself seems to be able to pulled up and down by hand and since it's a targa, no longer rises and drops automatically when the door opens and shuts.

Bit concerned that the seal isn't right and that rain will get in.

What could have broke, is it expensive to repair? Is it something that would be covered by Porsche extended warranty?

Cheers

Your window regulator has gone. About £150 for a new one plus a couple of hours labour.

Ouch. So about 500quid then to sort. Any idea if that would be something that's sortable under warranty?

Speak to your OPC.

What's the point ? I've asked them questions about warranty stuff before and they never give an answer, instead opting for the generic "we will have to look at it" etc answer.

Would rather hear from others on here if they have had a similar experience , it is a forum after all :thumb:
Rather than driving a 3 hour round trip and being charged 300quid in "diagnostic fees" to be told it will cost £750 to fix

Ahh a bit more digestable. I have a Porsche specialist near me who I will be calling on Monday to see how much they think it will cost.

Mine did the same earlier this year; it also drops on the coupe when opened, so I guess leak potential is the same. I fixed mine in position (just below the lip seal bit, so the door would open without catching)with a wedge and some duct tape and it sealed fine.

If you're going to repair it yourself (I did) the regulator costs about the same from Porsche as it does from ECP. the only difference is the Porsche one will fit.

If you're getting it done; get the door membrane replaced whilst the door card is off. :thumb:
Also!; The new regulator has a couple of plastic "stops" fitted (I think its because they also go in boxster/caymans) MAKE SURE you remove these on installation. (I didn't! :frustrated: )

Just checked my invoice. When my driver side one went last year, my mechanic fit a genuine Porsche regulator. 2.5 hrs labour and £137+VAT for the regulator.

Came to £255 all in including VAT.

You asked the question about warranty, if I thought your answer to your own question was going to be "What's the point...." I wouldn't have taken the trouble to try and help you, it is a forum after all.
Good luck with your window fix. In addition to the excellent advice you have already received there are several threads on this forum discussing window regulators and possible fixes.
Here's some more helpful advice, have a search of the forum.

It's a community. Would you rather people didn't bother posting very much and the forum becomes stale? Or that I commit thread necromancy? People seem to moan more about that than posting semi repeated content.

The amount of times people have posted about Bluetooth audio or replacement stereos or any number of things and you have not brought up the classic "use search" for them.

Come on, don't be such a stick in the mud. It's literally bothered noone apart from you it seems.

Thank you very much for the replies though. At least I now know it's not going to break the bank. Although it comes at a crap time given that we are just starting the process of buying a new house lol
Fwiw I have contacted 2 opcs this morning and both , as expected, gave no clear reply and want me to bring in to diagnose.

It sounds like something has broken.

Under these circumstances an OPC would take it in, confirm that fact, and fix it under warranty.

If there's not a broken part they will fix it and charge you for doing so.

It seems very unlikely that it won't be a warranty claim but if you fear that you might have to pay a few ££s extra take it somewhere else.

Personally I'd make a claim.

yeah, thats what i figured. I can't seem to see there being any 'wear and tear' items in the window mechanism, so as such 'should' be covered under warranty. but as with anything porsche warranty, its only confirmed when its confirmed from looking at it.

The wire that pulls the glass up and down gets worn and deteriorates (rusty) and then snaps, so I'd call that wear and tear, although I've just read on another forum that someone had there's replaced under warranty.
