Dashcam Hardwire - Fuse Question

Hi all,

I am looking to hardwire a BlackVue DR900X Dashcam to my Porsche. I am far from being an expert and there is one thing I am not sure about. I did extensive research in this forum and online in general. Most people seem to use fuse taps like these to hardwire the Dashcam:
https://blackvue.com/product/fuse-taps/

However, there are plenty of empty fuses in my fusebox I would like to try first. My issue is: I can't seem to find accessory which allows to just add a cable to a fuse (i.e. the same as the fuse-taps above, just without the option to add two fuses). Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
farmobile

Fuse boxes on these have unused fuses depending on the model and spec .. they will have a single terminal where the fuse would go.

This can either be a permanent or an ignition on feed depending on the rail .

You would need to find the correct terminal , connect it to some wire and this involves a special type of crimping pliers to then fit the terminal into the fuse box opposite the single terminal so that a fuse will join them .

This would include removing the fuse box , removing the rear cover and fitting the terminal .. not hard but fiddly .

You could then attach the wire to the dash cam and probably a 3 or 5 amp fuse installed and it would look original .

The difficulty is porsche dont list individual terminals for every wiring application on every model .. they basically say a new loom if damaged .

VW do however sell individual terminals but getting the correct cross reference to a Porsche ( they are basically the same terminals ) is rather difficult .

We had an old 997 front loom we replaced .. i spent one christmas removing every terminal , allowing 8 inches of wire and cutting off and bagging them up so that we have a large supply as and when we need one .. If as a garage we cant source the correct terminals without buying one after another after another to try and get the right one then you get the idea how much grief we have had !

At the end of the day the double fuse works .. its quick and its hidden behind the fuse cover so it is the best option .

To find the correct terminal though ..

You could try here ..

or here ..

or here ..

You have the option of splicing a wire onto the feed you require behind the fuse board and using an inline fuse if you wish tucked above the fuse board .. but that brings us back to the double fuse in terms of what it looks like .

Amazing, thanks so much deMort. That explains why I have a hard time even finding something like that. Will go for the double fuse. Thanks again.

You can use a piggy back fuse/fuse tap, it plugs in place of an existing ignition live fuse and taps off a new feed with an extra fuse in the holder, much simpler than hard wiring in.

You don't say in your signature what model car you have and different fuse boxes use different positions for ignition wiring so I can't tell you exactly which fuse to use?
For the 996 one of the ignition lives is E8, that is the one I have used for a new head unit I recently fitted and I'll be wiring heated seats up soon so will be tapping a new one in over the next few days.

Thanks infrasilver. Signature fixed - I got a 982.

Ordered some of the fuse taps now. Looks pretty narrow in the fuse box already - so not sure the fuse box cover will still close but will surely figure that out. Keep you posted.

They look like they take up a lot of room but they are quite slimline, I know it isn't a hardwire solution but they are easily reversible and easy to install.

Also welcome to the forum and you need to do a proper introduction and pics of your car in the Cayman/Boxster section

Thanks all, very helpful. I used fuse taps in the end (slots B3 alarm horn for hot and D1 - empty anyway - Rear Wiper for switched). Fuse box is closing as well (tight though). So far no issues. Bit worried about the car's battery but I'll see.
