Taycan Depreciation, EV thinking update vid.

I’m not so sure, IMO pay by mile would be an extension of the (unpopular) 15 minute city idea - an attack on personal freedom etc etc

Public transport / taxi’s are based on a cost per mile just in different forms eg zonal, initial fee then variable, etc….………..it will come in one day in one form or another but hopefully long after I’m around to see it. Personal transport will be significantly different in another 100 years more so than it has changed over the past 100 years, we are ultimately just passing trade on that continual evolution of not just logistics but the way humans fundamentally live

There will be other more personal solutions by then too though. When I’m 150 years old I’ll be getting around with my jet pack 😎

I'll just teleport......almost do that already in the taycan :ROFLMAO:

not like public transport has changed much in the last 50 years.....

same method but newer fuel sources I would expect

As one who has been very fortunate to greatly enjoy ICE engine involvement in m/cycles cars and P.U. trucks over many decades, also that the mechanical sound created by engines and their exhausts has ever been music to my ears, I now find that my EV fits very well into my life used as a basic transportation device, all be it I feel blessed to have my 991 and old V8 crate in the garage, ready and waiting to go at any time....What`s more to want..?

In terms of EV vs an ICE mundanemobile... Having just watched a vid where it took a professional mechanic using both an engine crane, ramp, and with the aid of specialist tools, two days to replace a rattling timing chain on an Astra 1.6..!!! Given the ever increasing complexity of modern-day engine design it seems maintenance costs were bound to be higher than once they were, when one could change the timing belt on a Ford OHC engine in jig time, and without the need for a raft of professional specialist equipment...?

When I bought the Tesla, and asked about service schedule requirements, I was told to book it in when it is approaching three years old... For it`s MOT.. !

Perhaps that it seems everything is so closely monitored on a Tesla, and that brakes are seldom used in normal driving, given re-gen can carry out the majority of the braking, and electric motors have a miniscule number of parts relative to any modern ICE... Perhaps a first check over it`s functionality after a period of three years might work out well enough...? That software updates can be carried out using home wifi, seems another possible advantage as opposed to having to visit the dealership to perform a similar function...?

whilst I don't disagree the ownership experience 'appear to be' simpler
the reality of the industrial processes necessary to create the technology is what is what is all wrong, with issues with recycling used batteries and the fire issue

it's just another media scam of what they are not telling the wider population, the illusion EV's are saving the planet when they are doing the opposite
as for the performance driving enjoyment, there isn't any apart from bursts of acceleration

you do raise an important issue, with emission and technology complexities, combustion engines are no longer simple and cheap to maintain

what I do know is there is no substitute than the flat 6 Porsche combustion engine

i have watched quite a few of his vids and he has hated the taycan since he bought it? I think he did it for his business to start with, tax or EV rebate what ever. Anyone who cant be arsed to watch it and I don't blame you if you cant , he is owing more on it than it is valued at by an enormous margin and that is after paying out a whole load of cash to start with, it is click bait but the underlying thing is it isn't working for him or so he makes out
If he hated that much why keep it you might think. I can answer that. for his channel content.
I'm not a fan of EVs either but to each his own I say, otherwise we would all be driving the same thing.

Thanks for posting the vid JZP. Hugey, I suspect you hit the nail on the head re the troubled Taycan tout`s awful vid, and as such I suspect many could well understand some of his frustrations.

Being just a lay person and with no axe to grind (as yet) I tend to be trying to achieve a wider picture on the possible realities of EV with the passage of time, which is difficult given the likely overwhelming bias that is just bound to be out there along with normal to expect Luddite tendencies... (-:

Without any real research, it seems perhaps not enough time may have passed to make judgements on battery life expectancy and recycling thereof..? Apparently the battery pack may be expected to last 8-10 years, and if that may be true, then in my situation that has the potential to work out well enough. I suspect there is still a long way yet to go in terms of battery technology relative to efficiencies and recycling..? As to making predictions for the future on those making the most noise today.... Hmm..?

Running costs, yeah well Insurance came as a bit of a surprise, but then it seems Insurance costs in general have jumped for many folk by some degree, Range Rovers seem to perhaps have gone up as much as Tesla...though hopefully both are examples of extremes for understandable reasons..?

Tyre wear is something I have yet to learn about, however commercial vehicles with their heavier loads do not expect to change tyres in relatively short periods of time, that being my expectation I would have expected Tesla to have engaged a tyre manufacturer to design a tyre suitable for the loads their car would be likely to exert upon the tyre relative to wear and all else expected of a tyre. I do wonder if the tyre chat is more down to general expectations of the pundits who "expect" such problems...?

As for the sound of the flat six... (-: Yeah well, I have had to allow my expectations to evolve with the passage of time, as my 991 creates quite a different tune than did my old air cooled 911`s.... (-:

for a while almost all of the Telsa Microwave's have been on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's to handle the weight and performance, the latter that very few brands can do

the irony is this caused supply issues for Michelin PS4S for 911's worldwide as the Michelin PS4S production was all heading to Telsa Microwave !

Having wandered around the www a bit in search of informed answers re possible excessive tyre wear on EV`s, as suspected it seems some thought was put into the special needs relating to tyre design for Tesla and others, which might be of interest to those in search of education.
My guess is that Porsche would have done likewise for the Taycan...?

I got 15k out of my first set, had some life in them but wanted a new set for winter. Wear was pretty even all round.
As well as the usual N rating they are also designated ELEC.
Cost was surpringly cheap at c£1200 for 4 fitted and I have the massive wheels fitted.
It's surprisingly hard to spin the wheels given the massive torque, it's actually easier to leave rubber down under hard breaking if you overbrake lol

I can only imagine the amount of torque available on a Taycan, given my Tesla takes off like a bat out of H*ll and I admit to making more use of that standing start acceleration more than I expected in general traffic situations..the only time I felt a degree of loosing grip was on a roundabout in the wet, though a little bit of steering correction got it all back into line without any drama whatsoever..

It does seem that perhaps EV`s can work well enough for a large part of the population in this vid...? Governmental priorities would seem to be key, along with better management of resources, along an extensive hydro power network, and a sovereign wealth fund built up on profits from oil... Interesting to see how others seem to manage quite well...?
