Why a 911 v's others

I had never hankered over a 911 at all, I'd fancied a Cayman for some time but due to my commute it was never really a consideration. Changing jobs and having only a 10 mile commute led me to looking at cars I wanted to own rather than something I needed to get to work and back, there was nothing in the price range I could afford that I wanted other than a Porsche, then the only decision was a Cayman or a 911! Wasn't a hard decision.

I have always been mad about bikes, particularly Ducati's, but the 911 has put the Duke in the shade and has hardly had a look in since I've had the car. Can't say the brand bothers me too much, unlike Ducati, for me it is all about the driving experience and how the car looks!

Love it! :thumb:

For me personally, I buy into the brand. I've never had a bad experience from OPC's. Actually it's the total opposite, the dealerships, especially the service management have gone above and beyond to make sure when they bring back the cars are in a better condition than when the car was collected.

The best advice I can give is don't ever scrimp on general running costs or servicing otherwise it will haunt you with repair bills. As per the reason there are plenty of Porsche vehicles on the market which are requiring expensive repair bills. Nobody should buy a Porsche without either buying it directly from a OPC with 2yrs warranty and BDS or if not an OPC get the potential purchase independently inspected by a Porsche specialist garage or a 111 check at an OPC.

A friend of mine is also a big lad, he struggles with sports seats and standard seats. The design is more for the slimmer build person, if you don't fit, well you don't fit. Not every penny fits the slot, as they say.

I suppose it depends on the price bracket of Porsche you are buying, at my budget I'm well out of the dealer network and just about in some indys, hopefully what I get has been cared for enough over the years.

On the subject of fitting, the wife said "you look a right idiot trying to get out of that!" It was the same with the r8 once in I'm not too bad it's getting in and out that can be hard.

 fellow biker here, moved away from sports bike / track bikes and back into enduro for a while.

I'm lucky that I have a car I use for work so it won't commute, I'll still have to have a family car to the kids, then I've got the mk1 20v turbo and enduro to play with so the 911 will be all pleasure driving.

I agree I love the look of the 911 especially from the back!!

I've recently moved to a 911 after owning 3 Audi TT's.

I'd shopped around for all sorts, Astons, Audi R8's. Nothing ticked the boxes like a 911 did. A 911 can be used daily, It's special every time you get inside it. The R8 was just a slightly larger TT - interiors we're almost identical.

Mercedes didn't drive like a 911 does, They seem to be aimed more towards females/posers. The feel through the steering wheel, the brakes and the power building up from behind ticks all the right area's in the driving experience department. I'm officially hooked on the brand...and even working out what my next 911 will be in a few years

You'll hear the beef about it being a beetle, or that they all look the same. But when you catch a glance of it in a shop window reflection. That smug feeling tells you you made the right decision

Yep, you're in good company on this forum. There's a good handful of us that have bikes. Currently I'm owning an R1, which has been professionally dry stored. I've not ridden it consistently for coming up to 3yrs now. But when I do ring the company up to say I'm taking it out, bejesus, drop the visor & what an adrenaline rush. Won't be long before my body tells me I'm not young anymore though.

I'm also a donny lad, well out in sticks near Bawtry.

You know any local sports car showrooms? I'm new to the area.

I had an r8 for the day (mate lends me his new cars when he gets them) and I did really like it even though it was auto but I agree the dash isn't great unlike the 997 which I really like.

Yep had the posh beetle comments already!

I blame my father - he bought me a model 911 when I'd done something well at school when I was about 7 or something. Still got it now :thumb:

They really get under your skin as to drive them hard, you have to alter your driving style. And they do drive superbly well when pushed.

They are properly fast.

I love the fact that they slip under most people's radar, and in a sober colour no one takes any notice of them.

They are genuinely practical for someone with a young family.

They can be used every day (mine is).

They are relatively inexpensive to run.

I had a 993 for two years and have now had my 997.2 for 4 years. I cannot think of another car I'd rather have right now.

In summary, get one. You won't regret it

What they've all said :)

Been my daily drives for 13 years now and
Still put a smile on my face every day !!! That's why.......

Best cars in the world for me - bar none :thumb:

Just bought my 4th 911 2 weeks ago - 997 C2S Cab - 35,000 on the clock for £29k. So much car for the money - looks almost new, fast as you'll ever need (the acceleration is addictive), and feels like a Very special car.

Do the research, make sure you spend the £350 on a full check over inc Bore Check, AND GET ONE

Good luck !

John Holland In sheffield is good to potter around and see some variety.

Hayseldens select in Doncaster have the odd nice motor (opposite the VW hayseldens). Other than that, it's just the usual car dealerships with young lads wanting to sell PCP deals

Daz, I won't add any more to the "why buy a 911" because when you drive one you'll understand!

I do have a couple of contacts for you that may be able to help.

Firstly, Mark at GT Performance Detail. I bought mine from him and he is a top bloke, honest, no BS and very genuine. He doesn't have any 997's for sale currently but he might be able to help you source a good one.

http://www.gtperformancedetail.co.uk

Mark also put me on to the guys below for servicing etc as they do all the work on his cars. Again, really top blokes and they are really helpful with answering questions and helping calm your fears of the car going bang!

http://www.porschtek.co.uk/

They are based in York and Leeds respectively so not too far from you.

Good luck with the search.

I've a few days off now so I'm going to look for a few local 911's to look at and I'll have a look through some sports car shops to see what they have in stock also.

Thanks for the info

My mate buys all his cars from redline racing in Leeds (I was a Leeds lad till last year) and he knows him very well so I'm going to look there.

I know my reasons for wanting one I was asking why everybody else decided on one over other cars.

I've always wanted a 911 ever since I knew what a car was. There's just something about them! Driving one has totally confirmed that they are indeed very special.

For your budget you'll get into a nice 997.1 and shouldn't lose loads of money on it even if you use it every day.

There are loads of horror stories online, but if you go digging enough there will be horror stories about every 10-12 year old sports car.

Making a cheeky offer on a 911 might work, but I had a hard time knocking any cash off at all as they're in high demand currently. The main issue will be securing a good one before it's sold. I think quite a number of cars are bought and sold before they even hit the classifieds.

Get a pre purchase inspection. If you find a good one that checks out then you'll be happy as a pig in the proverbial, but if you buy what you perceive to be a good one without a check and it requires cylinder re-lining, oil seals replacing or a major suspension refresh you'll go from a car that is relatively affordable to a nightmare money pit.

I put a deposit down subject to a satisfactory pre purchase inspection. This luckily for me was ok and the minor problems (which I would never have identified) were sorted out by the dealer.

Good luck, enjoy the hunt for your perfect car. I honestly couldn't think of anything else I'd prefer to drive than my C2S cabriolet (especially in this weather) for my money.

EDIT: I got all wrapped up in how great the 911 is without answering your specific question "why not another car?"

I enjoyed depreciation free motoring with my Honda S2000, it handled brilliantly and the engine was a peach, but it lacked the outright power and looks of the 911. I would have kept both cars if I had a double garage... I had to triple my budget to better that car, the gearbox is much better than the Porsche one!

Other cars for a similar price and performance are limited to fast Mercedes and BMWs. I guess a Jag F type might just have dipped into budget, but nothing has the handling, pace and practicality of the 911. A BMW M3 just doesn't light my fire in the same way even though they're very capable, and being a convertible lover it's hard to find something with no roof that is as good as the 911.

The 911 is and always has been a marmite car. You do either love them or hate them.....

I don't hate mine, but I equally don't love it either. I like it a lot but it's not a car I hanker over.

I bought it at two years old at the end of the 'credit crunch' for a really good price and its value is not far off what I paid for it and at ten years and 42K miles. There wasn't, and still isn't a real rival for performance, agility and its depth of abilities at this price point. It will happily tootle around town, drive down to the Nurburgring, do ten spirited laps and drive back without breaking a sweat. A Vantage or R8 may have it pipped on looks, sound and many other things but nothing comes close as a complete package.

That's why I've owned it for 8+ years, have no intention of selling it, it's gradually creeping up in value, but it's not a love affair.

For me the main rival is an rs4 so the kids (10 and 5) could sit in comfort and therefore might get used more, then the r8 but only on how the rear looks and the sound but then it's only a two seater (and I'd have to big deeper)

I know I will have to adapt my driving coming from high horsepower turbo charged cars.
