Searching for the Holy Grail - a manual 991.1 GTS

Hi all,

I have set myself a potentially maddening task to find a manual GTS. I started my search in mid December and to date have only seen one car for sale.

The dealer in question is trying to sell with the benefit of a Porsche warranty, despite the fact that said warranty can only be validly transferred via a private sale. Perhaps I am being picky but the prospect of a warranty claim being refused doesn't excite me. I find it bewildering that cars are blatantly advertised on such basis and that Porsche seemingly are not doing anything to prevent this.

Anyway, the purpose of my message is to enquire whether anyone is considering selling. If so please get in touch. I understand there are only c.50 cars in the UK so I guess I may be waiting for a while for one to come up.

The lure of the car is obviously it being the last of the NA models available in manual form. I have a C63 at present and whilst it has an amazing engine and soundtrack, it lacks tactility and the sense off interaction that comes from changing gears rather than clicking a paddle.

If the Holy Grail goes unfound, the alternatives I would consider are a 991.2 GTS (if an interesting spec.) or a 991.2 T. Any observations from people that have driven a 991.1 GTS and either of these would be welcome.

Thanks

Is the car being sold by the dealer on behalf of a private individual - (i.e) acting as a broker :?:

It seems to be a way around the issue that you rightly point out and must be OK with Porsche as it's been done by some very reputable Porsche Specialists for some time.

If it's not, then you're right to be cautious. The warranty would be invalidated by such a sale. Obviously you would be covered by Consumer Rights laws against the selling dealer but that could get messy.

ps. :welcome: to 911uk and good luck with your search.

Dealer has bought the car into stock rather than being a sale on behalf of a customer. Apparently if they ask you simply tell Porsche you bought the car privately and thus nothing to worry about......

Agh, the old 'just lie to the Insurance company' gambit. :nooo:

It's you that would need to falsify the Warranty Transfer document and sort it all out if it went pear-shaped when you make a claim.

The process is there so that Dealers have to comply with Consumer Rights Laws rather than pass the buck as this one is trying to do.

The upside for you is that they would have to fix any issues you have with the car - regardless of whether it's covered by the Porsche extended warranty - but my worry would be how slippery the dealer might be if it came to such a situation.

A dealer who recommends committing Insurance fraud is a dealer I would be walking away from.

How long is left on the warranty? If a car is covered under the Porsche warranty there is no inspection when you renew. You just ask an OPC to prepare the new schedules and the warranty starts again under the new term. This means only the period to renewal is the risk.

Of course you should point out to the dealer the warranty is not worth anything and should be discounted from the price at usual rates circa 1k per year.

I've just renewed my warranty. The OpC did not even see the car as went in my daily.

As it's a rare spec so only you can decide if the risk is worth it.

They are wonderful cars and worth the wait. The next thing you will beat yourself up about will be whether the 1 in 50 cars you find actually has the rounded spec you want. Worth deciding on the must-haves vs nice-to-haves ahead of time.
Best of luck hunting

That was the only way forward I could see. Trouble is the dealer won't budge on price and there is c.18 months of warranty left. Paying OPC money and then paying again for the warranty doesn't make sense.

Indeed - or looking at it the other way, what are the showstoppers. Only thing I don't want is a black car. I know a car is for driving but black shows every bit of dirt. Preference is for no sunroof but can compromise on that. Perfect spec would be GT silver, GTS interior pack and maybe a couple of options (parking sensors/Bose etc.). That probably narrows it down to a handful of cars.....therefore some compromises will be inevitable.

I had to compromise on the GTS interior which felt like a bit 'thing' at the time but to be honest I have never missed it since getting the car.

The selling dealer is responsible for the car so you are covered whatever by making any claim directly to them. Whether the car justifies the price being asked is up to you.

Under normal circumstances after 90 days of ownership you can legitimately take out a Porsche Extended Warranty on the car so it might be possible to make a transfer of existing warranty in a similar way. :dont know:

NB: It probably isn't possible as I believe the warranty becomes void when the car is actually sold to a non-OPC dealer.

The only way to be sure would be to ask Porsche GB either directly or through an OPC.

This is my understanding too.
However, would it be possible if for example one of the owners to the independent dealership was indeed the owner of the car in question and that it had a Porsche approved warranty?

Maybe, but I don't think this is the case in this instance.

I looked at this car before buying another just after Christmas.

I reported the seller through AT for the very reason you've highlighted, nice to know they take fraudulent sellers seriously though eh! 🙄

The previous owner should have got a refund on the remaining warranty, dealer rescued the price accordingly or offered to cover the cost of a new extended warranty for the new owner. Too much hassle for some dealers though to do things properly.
