***Non-Turbo 996 owners - Please read - IMS DATA REQUIRED***

I do wonder whether the prevalence of the C4s is to do with the fact that >2002 went with the single row ball bearing design, which all c4s had. Early 3.4 996s had the double row and, in the opinion of some, are more durable. So the issue is pre 2002 or post 2002 rather than some thing specific to the c4s. Just a suggestion...

Single-row bearing, 16k mile/2 year service intervals, minimal use, manufacturing tolerances, assembly issues, poor ownership care, non recommended oil, etc.

A+B+C+D+E+F+G= H Bomb!

They went to a single row bearing around 2000.

comment: Replaced out of caution whilst engine being rebuilt due to bore score.
ADDITIONAL - Hartech reported NO issue or play with the original bearing. It was perfect. Replaced out of caution anyway.

Data collected so far for 77 cars (25th June 2015).

Here's a couple of bar charts showing which engines and models have sustained a failure:

Total number of failures - 7.8% (Not including the LN as a original failure)
of which 3.4 - 0% and 3.6 - 10.9%
of which all X51 - 0%, C2 - 10.5% and C4S - 12.9%

Last reported failure was July 2014 (not including the LN failure).

comment: don't plan to upgrade the bearing as in my opinion, a "botched" IMSB replacement has a higher % risk than the original IMSB

comment: don't plan to upgrade the bearing on the principle that if it was going to go pop it would have done already.

Some further discussion here on IMS bearing failure.

Elsewhere (I think on this forum?) I've read some technical chat too about extra cooling with X51 reducing probability of cylinder 6 bore score and better lubrication reducing chance of IMS. But would need a big sample to verify.

comment: I had the car checked over at purchase and it passed with flying colours, apart from needing new exhaust mounts. So all good so far.
