Hi gents
Haven't been on the forum much for the last couple of years. I took my 2002 c2 off the road suspecting bore scoring. I didn't want to sell it on as it wouldn't be fair to the next owner.
I thought I would start saving a few quid but haven't so have decided to take the plunge anyway.
I have bought a scope to check out the bores and going to drop the sump off for a look. After that it will be MOT and then research what my options are. I quite fancy dropping the engine myself. I assume this would reduce the overall bill although that's not the main reason. I fancy the challenge and would carry out some other work while I have it at home still.
Potentially need a portable scissor lift and it's a good excuse to buy one.
Any advice on lifts and the potential rebuild would be appreciated.

I just bought a quickjack and I'm very happy with it, makes jobs much easier and safer.

It has the advantage that it's a bit more portable than a scissor lift and gives clearer access under the car.

Pricewise, they all seem to be roughly in the same ballpark : 1500 - 2500 for a quickjack, scissor lift or a two post. It's mostly about what fits your requirements/situation.

Regarding engine out... :worship: I guess it's like anything, with time, patience, the internet and the right tools...anything is possible :thumb:

One question, why do you suspect bore scoring?

I just did the same thing.

I bought a quickjack and removed my 996 engine.

Very straightforward, just lots of things to undo.

It took me about 4 or 5 half days to remove, 20 minutes to refit and about a day and a bit to re fit all the bits.

The engine and box come out as 1 unit (2 engine mounts and 2 gearbox bolts into the chassis.

You will need either a hydraulic trolly to sit the engine/box on or a decent high lift trolly jack with a transmission adaptor. I paid £35 for the adaptor from ebay.

Lastly when you roll the engine/box out you will need to physically lift the rear of the car up about 5 inches. This i did with 2 friends as it is not heavy.

QJ is the way to go simply because there are no impediments under the car allowing free access using a crawler and for rollung the jack around underneat, plus they can be stored upright in a corner or laid flat on the floor under a car.

Thanks for the reply.
I will look into the quick jack.
I suspect scoring because of two classic symptoms. Blackened ns tail pipe and that awful ticking/tapping noise that has got progressively worse.
Hopefully get chance to get the sump off next week and check out with my scope from Amazon.

Bore scoring pictures

Confirmed scoring on cylinders 6,5,4. Hope the pictures upload never tried before.
The engine sounds that tappy I don't really want to drive to get MOT.
Not sure if it's safe or would cause catastrophic damage.
So decision to be made.
Been offered £11k to sell to famous trade in company but with full MOT.
Or take the plunge and get the engine rebuild.
Gutted as the car has only done 59,000 miles and I spent ages picking the right one. Or so I thought.

Its a shame - but I would see this as an opportunity. Go get the rebuild and then relax in the knowledge you have a bullet proof and improved motor to enjoy for many years to come. :D
