hi everyone
i have been reading this forum for many months but not contributing! it has been very informative reading and a really helpful resource.

sorry to start off by asking for an opinion on 3 blue 993's currently for sale, but I've been watching 993 prices on piston heads/autotrader and individual dealer sites for a while and noticed this iris blue C2 with 92k miles which was up at £46k about 6-8 weeks ago and i see today it has been reduced to £40k:

http://locator.porsche.com/ipl-customer/ipl/details/details.ipl?cid=1

combining the description from the porsche site and the auto trader site i learn that this is the 'classic courtesy car' of OPC Leeds that they have put up for sale.
does the price still seem a bit high to you lot? 6 month warranty is probably similar to the obligatory one provided by any indie out there.

I see it has 11 owners, which may be an issue? but on that topic, if we look at who is selling it, one would think they are comfortable with the service history, plus i have often thought that a car with that many owners means along the way it has been constantly prepared for sale and maybe been inspected multiple times along the way and just more pairs of eyes checking it along the way as it gets serviced at different places around the country, but needless to say a e.g 3-4 owner car with the same details would be worth more of course.

for comparison this C2 is almost identical spec, same mileage, also been on sale for 6-8 weeks, but 5 owners for £43k:

Finally this one from a dealer that doesn't look like they would normally deal in this type of car, its been on sale for at least 2 months, its on the wrong wheels and doesn't seem to sit correctly on them anyway, 82k miles and £40k:

Id say that any of these cars if they were up as private sales would be in the £36-38k area or so? I am a bit reluctant to buy privately but I have bought a car from a dealer that had a car on SOR before which, in my eyes, is very similar to buying privately and i treated it with the same amount of caution.

sorry that my first post has turned into an essay! no rush to reply - any thoughts appreciated, especially on whether you all think i can ignore the number of owners IF the service history is absolutely complete. to quote the 911 virgin guys i think they said something like if its a ford mondeo with 10 owners in 10 years its probably a lemon but with these machines it can be quite common.

cheers

Welcome.

I don't think the number of owners matters at all. And the mileages you're looking at are all in the same range. Focus on condition and you'll be good :thumb:

ETA: The second car looks the tidiest, with prep having been carried out at Nine Excellence - a very reputable specialist. Have you asked what work was carried out?

The OPC car looks straight but unexceptional. If they're open to doing work to the car before you take it, you could ask them to carry out their usual 111 point check and share the results with you.

Avoid the last car - the wheels are cheap aftermarket copies, makes me take an instant dislike to it!

Plate changes can also show up as change of owners sometimes i believe but dont let it bother you. Judge the car.

Only the ODavis link works for me now. That car badged 911, not Carrera, which always looks odd to me.

many thanks for the replies.
mohitos that is a good idea to ask if it has had a 111, or if they would include it and address any issues as part of the deal.
agreed on nine excellence - i havent got to the stage where i have called the vendors.... because i am actually hunting for a slate grey C2 manual couple...... but i rarely see them in that colour in manual. bluie is my second choice and i thought those 3 cars, on paper quite similar, were worthy of comparison/discussion.
for now ill continue to keep hunting, i am aware that prices are holding but i am trying to stick to my original plan!

chrisT70 - i dont think plate changes count as an additional owner on the V5.

tobesetc - i agree that chrome 911 rear badge looks wrong and looks like its the badge or part number from a 996. an easy delete of course. also to my eye that engine cover isnt sitting flush with the top of the rear reflector? maybe just a case of adjusting, i know sometimes the front bonnets can look out of alignment but sometimes the bonnet panel is super straight but just needs adjusting at the mounts. also as its a C2 shouldn't the front lenses be amber rather than clear? an easy fix i guess but i am in the camp that is after a non-modified car only with factory spec options and no changes.

i have tried editing my original message so hopefully the links work again.

Welcome ms2015. I'll be passing through Ruddington early next week, if you want I can pop by and have a quick look at it if you are interested?

Hi MS

Welcome, I don't know the car at Ruddington or the garage that well but my cousin has bought one from them before and they seemed pretty straight with her at the time, nothing special but no horror stories either.

Like NottsC4S I also have to go near Ruddington this week so if your interested I will try and have a quick look for you.

NottsC4S I would love to see your car sometimes a Viola c4S must be very rare and pretty .

Personally I'd feel much happier parting with cash for a car with 5 or 6 previous owners rather than 11.................

Sorry ...... that's absolute tosh as has already been explained in part ....... always buy ON CONDITION ....... that is all one needs to know ....... so the OP should act accordingly.

Those wheels on the Ruddington car look like PWS aftermarket rims. Extremely heavy and very pronounced (ie thick) outer flanges which defeat the anti-kerb band fitted to most of the tyres we fit to 993s

The last car linked too (L100EGO) is most probs joint oldest registered 993 in the UK and it would have been a demo for the launch.
That's why its got the sports seats, I would imagine it will have aircon as well.
I doubt that makes the car worth anymore, but its something unusual at least. The wheels/tyres on it though look awful. I'd also check the car over and especially the history file very carefully. That mileage looks low to me for that car for some unknown reason.

Happy shopping :)

Looking at that MOT checker site it was first used 6th december 1993. The mileage seems to tally up with those noted by the MOT testers. Looks to have done few miles between '12-'13 @1.2k and '13-'14 @1k and approx 2k in the last year. Passed latest test in september with only advistory being front tyres wearing on inner edge, probably due to non standard offset.

guys thanks for the feedback.

NottsC4S and nimrod - a very kind offer to check out the car but i shall decline for now and continue the window shopping. I will no doubt have many reasons to pick your brains soon though!

carkid - i am actually quite relaxed about a high number of owners - i used to have the same reflex and walk away, but actually, if the condition matches the mileage and the service history, i am happy, with these cars i think they do pass through the hands of a lot of people who just want to try one out for a year before swapping it - especially in the early years 1994-2000.

another theory i have, possibly a bit off the wall, but if we use the example of certain owners disconnecting the speedo/odo, lets say a 20 year old car car had 5 owners and a couple of them routinely did that over an extended period of time, maybe the mileage ends up being 20-25% lower than real, now take an 11 owner car, with that regularity of turnover what are the chances all 11 owners would have done that same trick? happy to be told im talking rubbish though.

essentially for my budget i think ill be able to get something reasonable, the only thing that really puts me off is Insurance cat c/d cars, with all respect to those who do have one, for me, i dont consider myself experienced enough in the field to look past that.

wozy - agreed with all that - plus i could never drive a car with a plate that says ego on it.....!

bit off-topic but been looking at the faq's on colours, as mentioned my favourite is slate grey, ive always thought a 993 would look great in GT silver, i think 993's pre-date that colour from porsche and it was arctic and polar back in the day, have any of you had one painted in GT silver?
to HPNer - if you are reading - lovely job on that riviera blue.

You're never going to prove/disprove that and that's why you need to buy on condition and have a good inspection undertaken by someone who knows these cars. Buyers in the UK get hung up on what the odo says and how many owners the cars had - fact. That's an issue when you come to sell but actually (and I'm agreeing with Mads  ) doesn't mean a lot in terms of enjoyment. A low miler and you'll be shaking like a shitting dog when it notches up a few thousand as you 'wipe off' some value. Higher mileage doesn't really matter and these engines are good for 200k+ without serious work.

Chances of finding a car with the right number of owners (from the clergy) with the right mileage in the right colour at the right price you may have a long wait - or compromise as I'm struggling to do finding a Cayenne diesel :pc:

Dont discount cars that need work if the price is right and restoration cost figures work 8)
