944 turbo, BIG turbo

A friend of mine runs a very niche car dealership, very specialist stuff. I'm always mulling over ditching my Cossie for a 944 turbo, and he knows this.

Sent me some pics last night of a 944 turbo he's getting in, running a 3.0 turbo 968 engine, 600+bhp. Looks utterly standard, must be an absolute missile and a total sleeper.

The stock 968 turbo ran just over 300hp and the RS version only c350hp so how are they getting that power output. :?:

Only a handful of both those cars were produced so it would be interesting to know where the engine came from.

It's got a pretty hefty turbo installed. From the details he sent me it looks to be a properly sorted car, not some thrown together mess.

I guess when a 'charged E46 3.2 can easily put out over 600 then a similar output from a 3.0 isn't ridiculous, although in something the size of a '44 it must be hilarious.

Is it still the saff?

That's the sort of power a tuned 997 Turbo is putting out, in a near 30 yr old car I'd be very cautious. One of the local Porsche owners up here has been trying to tune a 944 Turbo and it's now become an ornament at a local Porsche Indy with the engine in bits and hasn't run in 2 years.

Yes. Barely moved for about 7 years.

Christ you've had that thing years if it's the same one I saw. Time to cash her in I say and scare yourself in something equally dangerous, like that 944tbo

26 years to be exact.

Crikey. There comes a point though where it will become an heir loom lol. Fairly sure I remember driving it. Must be 16 years ago  wow.

I know, I've already got one tuned up dinosaur in the garage. The engine on the 944 has been built by a very, very well regarded shop.

Who's the local Indy? Not Nelsons is it?

No a very patient D & G. From what I understand it's being rebuilt again, as the last rebuild lasted 40 miles.

Is that the guy that does cosworth engine builds?

There are a few 16v 944/968 Turbo projects floating around, although 600bhp+ sounds a bit far fetched. Would love to see the dyno plots :thumb:

Also the pictures of said car :useless:

I believe the engine was built at Harvey Gibbs, and yes, he's the Cosworth guru.

I'll have to figure out uploading some pics, but honestly, from the outside it's a bog standard (bar the wheels) 944 turbo.

Quite doable. 650bhp with a 2 litre 4 cylinder was done nearly 20 years ago on a road car so it's not out of question.
