TOTAL 911 SALES DEBATE: WHERE WILL THE PORSCHE 991 GT3 RS ENTER THE SECOND-HAND MARKET?

991-GT3-RS-rear.jpg

The list of those interested in buying the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS was, understandably, incredibly long. The Rennsport legacy is a strong draw for Zuffenhausen fans and, no matter what price tag Porsche placed on the 991 RS, people would have flocked to pay it. However, given that the car was effectively sold out before release, a list price of £131,296 looked remarkably cheap.

'I genuinely do [think it is undervalued]," Karl Meyer, Sales executive at Porsche Bournemouth, explains. 'Look at the category it is punching in, in terms of its performance figures. I think it is insanely undervalued."

This isn't just a case of an official agent talking up their product. Greig Daly, Sales Manager at esteemed independent specialist, RPM Technik, agrees. 'When you compare it to anything else in that market place – like the Ferrari 458 Speciale – £131,000 looks incredibly cheap."

Compared to the opposition, the 991 GT3 RS looks phenomenal value at £131,296. Is it underpriced?

Meyer attempts to explains Porsche's pricing strategy. 'As we step into being a volume brand in some areas, the stronghold within Stuttgart are so keen to retain exclusivity," explains Meyer. 'That's why we keep launching these really limited edition cars. You've got to think that the only reason why we're not putting these cars at stupid money is for the love of the fans, the customers.

Yet, cars like the 991 GT3 RS aren't always bought by fans. Despite stringent attempts to prevent it, speculators will get their hands on the latest Rennsport 911 in an attempt to make a quick profit. When they start hitting the used market, where will the 991 GT3 RS fall price-wise?

'These cars are going to change hands at a £100,000 premium," Meyers declares. 'There's a red-decalled 996 GT3 RS up for sale at the moment at £180,000. You just think, what would you rather have? The new car just looks amazing."

Porsche's latest Rennsport has generated considerable interest, and not just from factory racing drivers.

Daly is no less assertive: 'I guess, as soon as those cars are hitting the market, as speculators flip them on, they'll put £100,000 on them. I might be wrong but, if a GT3 (which is £100,500 plus £10,000-12,000 of options) is trading at £160,000, it [the RS] is twice as rare."

The one thing Meyer and Daly disagree on is the effect this will have on previous generations of GT3 RS. While the latter believes the 991 version will 'probably drag them up as well", the former feels that it will instead cause a jump in 991 GT3 values. 'I'm happy to go on the record saying that the 991 GT3 will sit at a comfortable £170,000-190,000," Meyer says.

Whatever the knock-on effect, Porsche's undervaluation of the 991 GT3 RS looks set to hit the wallets of those who missed out on one new but are still keen to get a taste of the latest Rennsport as soon as possible.

I think Nickw was saying on another thread second prices are already GBP200k +........

I don't know how these 'speculators' get hold of the cars?

its called buying power and who you know...not what you know!

Certainly a proportion of them bought 918s. As part of the deal, people who signed up for a 918 were basically guaranteed a slot for the 991RS if they wanted them. Clearly any of those who didn't really want one will have taken the slot anyway for the free money on resale.

The unfortunate thing about this you probably won't see any being used.

If you come along to the 911uk trackdays, you will. Nickw & Senoj both pounded (and probably still do) their 997 RS's. No doubt Nick will in his new RS too.

I usually go to the Oulton Park one in March but I was away this year.

By "pounded" i assume you mean drove the car for its intended purpose with deft poise, speed and mechanical sympathy :floor:

Problem now is values are pricing folks out of track days, in Europe anyway Insurance is currently prohibitively priced.. I'm into an e46 M3 "track car" knock up as a result, it will no doubt end up costing more than the Insurance (net) but its good fun putting it together... :dont know:

The 991 RS retail price was always going to be a bit "cheap" relaltive to the used market but if you are Porsche what can you do? the used phenomenon is primarily RHD but you cant go in at £170k or so in the UK or the prices in Euro would have been way out of wack, especially with what's happening with the current exchange rates.

I think we need to see all the cars delivered, suss out how many they are actually going to make and then see. A no miles car should be circa 200 on the flip i reckon.

But, and its a big but, if the car is as great a drive as seems to be, and theoretically the reason for the premium in the first place perhaps some of the owners will hang on for a year or two and just enjoy the thing for the awesome car that it probably is.

Think about it objectively. There will always be someone tracking them - there always is. But rather than being tracked as commonly as £40k-£80k cars they will be as common as £180K+ machinery. In short, less than things like Ferrari 458s and McLaren <whateversillynumbertheyarecallingitthisweek>s. You see them, but not often and usually driven with restraint :nooo:

The ones being driven with conviction will mostly be (as now) on the most expensive track days out of general public sight I fear?

Go on a Curbstone day (€1100/day for Spa) & there's nothing but mega expensive machinery. Mostly it stays in the garages as the owners hobnob with their like-minded friends...

Well the 2nd hand UK market in these cars isn't going to happen for a fair
old time. The earliest right hand drive cars aren't getting built until Sept
...I have a November build slot, which is a pain in the bum, its just so late
in the year. Hopefully, PTS will have become available, if so that would be
great, and i'll be happy camper.
Hopefully there will be a few out there getting driven...I'm going to have
some fun in mine..! 8)

Given the lunatic 2nd 991 GT3 market, and the silly sticker prices, and the
fact that a decent specc'ed is north of 155K...i'll hazard a guess that any of
these cars which get flipped will now be north of 220K.

Glad to hear you will be driving yours. I saw a white 991 GT3 at Porsche Wilmslow priced at £160k! So yeah I can imagine they will go through the roof.

I hope you do! But in the cold light of day, will it be with restraint? It would be nice to have that problem.
