That 996 stereo thing

Morning everyone,

Would love to say long time listener, first time caller but i'm afraid i'm quite new to this forum. Just taken delivery of a 1999 996 cab in black, with black leather interior and black gt3 alloys. In short i've bought knight rider. .I've been waiting 20 odd years to own a 911 and finally persuaded my partner that this is the fun weekend car we want (yes "we"... and she agreed. Mainly to shut me up but it works for me...)

So my question to the experts out there, whats the best way of upgrading the frankly poor Becker stereo and 4 speaker standard kit on the 996? Is it worth going to an OPC and saying "Here's a pot of cash and my left arm, please upgrade me" or would an independent ICE retailer be a better bet.

See here's the thing, I'm no rude boy and don't want banging toons coming out of such a design icon but i do like music and would like it to sound good within the car, you know, a nice, full sound. I also quite like the subtlety of the Becker unit (just not the performance) so i'm not looking for something that negates the need for interior lights either....

Any thoughts? comments?

Thanks in advance all

Tim

Morning Tim,

Check out this thread for info on speakers etc. As for head unit - Becker Mexico Pro with Ipod adapter. Keeps the Becker/Porsche look.

4 speakers isnt great, but if you have a coupe you should be okay. If its a cab, you need more really for when the top is down.

welcome Tim, a more specialist ICE supplier will be able to both supply better ICE parts and solutions rather than your OPC, you just need to decide what to do...

911's are not known for their audio capability, count yourself lucky you have a more modern version ! but better speakers and an amp can easily solve such problems and the Porsche badged Becker I've found is weaker than the actual Becker units (very odd)

regards

ICE specialist can do A LOT MORE than your P dealer. With less money too....

The first thing is the lousy speakers.... do you have the dash speakers only ? Or do you also have those "woofers" at the lower corners of your doors ???

The head unit can be easily replaced. And then a proper Amp to run your new , better speakers , thats a good start. I dont know where in a cab , can you hide the sub(s)?

From memory its got 2 on top of the dash and 2 in the rear..

Hi,

Absolutely go for ICE specialist such as Uplands or Sextons. (admin, not endorsing them just had good preliminary dealings with them).

These guys can upgrade all the stuff ie amps speakers and sat nav far cheaper than Porsche. Had silly prices for retro fitting stuff. Essentially even with me sourcing the components they were not interested.

Anyway I am in the process of solving my lack of PCMII with a Pioneer Avic HD system and rear camera set up. Get the benefits of sat nav, DVD, MP3, iPOD and Bluetooth. Also looking at amp and speaker upgrades.

Alan.
