I'll NEVER put supermarket fuel in my car. IMO, and it is only my opinion, it is crap. My sister gummed up the fuel system in her car, resulting in a costly repair, she only used Tesco fuel. My wife had a major issue with her car, resulting in a limp home issue and costly repair, she was only using Tesco fuel. Both occurred in different parts of the country. Shell V power for my 911 and GT86, and wifey now uses Esso with no ill effects since.

Which locations and the two incidents you mention were they derv or petrol. I suspect both were south of the midlands. Correct ?

I fully get your view and decision however location plays heavily.

Derv in Hunstanton, Petrol in Wellingborough, so yes, south of the midlands. Prey tell, why is south of the midlands relevant?

:?: I wondered that as well when I read the earlier post :dont know: maybe it's because we don't use our cars as much because we are sitting on the beach or in the sun more, or is it that fuel performs better the closer you are to the arctic circle. :bandit: 8) I would like to know the real reason.

I think you might be onto something... Our Momentum99 is filtered through layers of glacial rock and ice which makes it much purer than the stuff you find daaaan saarf..

But then you guys never get out of 2nd gear in the crawling traffic so its hardly surprising we've so far only heard of a few cases of a bad brew of tescos finest fuel...

I didnt realise you use your cars less and sit on the beach but I doubt its the reason.
The significance is to do with where the fuel comes from that is supplied to the pumps. Some comes from the refineries in the UK other comes from spot market and the south coast has good access to this market. From the midlands North fuel comes from mainly the UK refiners almost irrespective of where its retailed so its quite possible for different regions to have different experiences.
I believe the North has less variability.

There is a morrisons petrol station in Hartlepool which has the cheapest fuel in the region due to it being close to a refinery apparently. Anyway, this place is well known for giving owners a tank full of frothy fuel which destroys cars!

I don't know how they get away with it because i know of loads of people affected.

Had to fill up with Esso 'supreme' 97RON whilst down in birmingham this week. 146p a litre!

The closest refinery to us is Humberside or Grangemouth :D

Tesco Momentum tastes a lot like chicken.

Well every day is a school day! Doesn't surprise me that the good folks in Hartlepool think they are closer to the refinery though.. bless em

I often read these fuel threads, this garbage about supermarket fuel being inferior is nonsense, ive tried all fuels, regular and super from every different place for 32 years and my vehicles perform exactly the same no matter what, no matter where. It's probably noticeable in an F1 car.

All in the mind, and I speak from long driving experience.

That's because they mostly come from the same source.

There was a detailed thread about 6 months ago from an expert as someone said. Shell was top, Momentum was 2nd, I only really use those two.

Personally, I will take the experts view, not one car running slightly badly. Could be the car and not the fuel after all.......

Unless your talking a diff thread the top was momentum and shell was well down, just had my car mapped at Litchfield and they said they always get more power on momentum cars.

I use Tesco Momentum in both Porschas and the Tesco regular diesel in the daily derv drinker, I did ask how much Momentum they sold at the local Station as I occasionally get a Lambda code thrown up on the Boxster, maybe twice a year. They said that they sell 50/50 Momentum and 95Ron. I tried Shell V-power Nitro and get the same occasional issue.

'Different' fuels - are they actually that different?

Hi,
having done some work on a tank farm a few years ago (thousands of tonnes of stored petrol, diesel etc) I was rather surprised to see tankers from Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, etc all filling up from the same point!

Can't help but think that your problems are probably more due to local fuel throughput - it goes off over time as we all know - than the supermarket chain themselves.

Rob

Personally I stay away from supermarket fuels primarily because of the silicon contamination issue a few years back, that kind of mess in my daily would probably write it off as an uneconomical repair.

The other part is use a busy fuel station which performs good maintenance on their storage tanks, a colleague with a 997.1 ended up with a fuel contaminated with water and didn't make it off the forecourt. Repair bill was over £5k and paid for by the garage insurer, this was an Esso branded station run by the every bit helps supermarket.

I've been using Momentum for 5/6 years across a turbo Mini Cooper S, MR2, Tuned Escort RS Turbo and the 996. Never had an issue. Around 90% of the time I use the same station.

Using V-Power round my way does give you issues, namely price and location, thanks to the nearest Shell being on a major A road, so it's around 20% more expensive than Momentum and a pain to get to.

Going back a number of years I ran a small fleet of 10 cars. I had a friend who worked for shell oil.

Next door to our location was a Tesco fuel station, about a mile away a Shell one. Following a similar conversation with him he asked me to do a basic experiment. I ran half the cars (which were all identical) with Shell & the other half on Tesco.

After a month we sat down & looked at the results. Firstly none of the cars had any issues but the cars running on Shell had a marked improvement in MPG. This outweighted the price difference. From that point on we used Shell.

This wasn't using the higher octaine stuff, and as I say was a few years ago.

For me, my porker is my baby & I feel she deserves "better" fuel so she only gets Shell or BP high octaine.

If I had Kylie for a night I wouldn't offer her blue label alcohol!

Each to their own.
