Stay away from Tesco Momentum!

I never thought the Tesco Momentum 99 Ron fuel was any different in quality than Shell's own type, but how wrong I was and now I truly believe the stories previously reported.

After my last fill up, I must've been down to the last quarter in the tank, when I start getting hesitation in 1st and 2nd gear from 2000 rpm. This continued for a week and baffled me. So finally, when this fuel was almost depleted I filled up with Shell V Power Nitro + and like magic the problems gone.

I'll never be using that crap again. It probably explains the slightly lumpy idle in my other car too, which is a 2005 Golf GTI.

I never use supermarket fuel. I get that momentum has the highest octane but there is more to fuel than just octane levels. I ended up using momentum about 6 months ago in my van as I was in an area unfamiliar to me and desperately needed to fill up. I got about half a tank in before it started to cut the power and the engine light came on. Once back on v power all was back to normal.

I use it all the time in my cars. Never had any issues.

Me neither.....prob a site issue where you fill up.

Used both never noticed any difference, apart from price!!

I also use Momentum and never had any issues with lumpy idle or hesitation or loss of power in any gear. I also use Shell V-Power from time to time and have never known or felt any differences between the two fuels - apart from the price of course!

IMHO it's cheap for a reason

I've used Momentum for the last five years or so. Never had a problem.

Tesco sell cheaper Heinz baked beans than Shell.

Sometimes its just profit margin.

We had a fuel specialist on here a couple of years ago and he had done tests on all the major fuels and he commented on how good the Tesco fuel was and that it burned really well.

I use Tesco fuel in both my cars and I've never had any issues. Although I do once a month fill up with Shell.

Likewise. Got Shell and tesco here. Car runs just as well on both fuels.

Got a mate who only ever uses Shell who had a fuel pump failure due to $hit in the tank clogging the pump. Must have been a bad batch, but goes to show there can be good and bad batches of fuel in any supply chain.

Like Isys says, there was a fuel expert on here a while ago. Turns out that almost ALL fuel at any pump is actually imported by Esso anyway. That includes Shell!

It would be a batch issue, not across the board. One bad tank of fuel doesn't mean the brand is inferior.
I got a bad tank of fuel going back a few years, and when I went back to the service station to let them know they told me that water had got into the tank (which wasn't closed properly) after a heavy downpour.

I have done extensive testing on the Dyno with Momentum, VPower and all the others. VPower and Momentum come out on top in terms of knock resitance on various high boost turbo charged cars.

The key is to go to a busy fuel station, as the octane rating seems to reduce after it has been standing for a while.
