Looking for Answers: M96 engine failure

GT4 - Take note.
Currently without doubt the land of the Rising sun has the best quality in terms of engineering. Not to be confused with a good driving experience.

The RGU university which I attend, here is but one example from which I am talking about in engineering, you can also email me on [email protected] if you wish, I'll even reply.

Aberdeen scientists and clinicians led the world with the development of MRI clinical scanning and made the critical discoveries that made MRI machines possible.
Their discoveries where offered around the world and the Japanese bought in within an hour on the phone because they knew they could make a commercial success of this.
Make what you will, in Japan the engineers have the same status as top ranking executives.
Go GT4 go Google!

Remember, I have only given you one example, believe me the list is long.

Before I take note or google, this is apropos of what?

But the japanese make the worlds most boring and derivative cars (with a few notable exceptions). Without the reliability, there is no other reason to buy a japanese car. And I speak with experience having had a Lexus IS that appeared to have been built by the PG Tips chimps, as well as enjoying a depreciation curve that made the 996 seem like a '73 RS!

There have been loads of M96 engined cars sold inc Boxsters, so there is a reporting bias in as much as engine failures make it onto the forums, whereas the thousands of other cars beetling about reliably go unreported.

We can disregard the RMS leaks, because I suspect most car engines will weep some oil, or at least need topping up from time to time.

Even the hallowed 3.2 and 964 Aircooled engines seem to need an expensive top-end rebuild at some point.

Porsche sell very subsidised engines as replacements, or there are specialists that will sort them, eg Hartech or Autofarm.

Rob, how much is very subsidised ? I can buy a brand new Polo for under 8k, a porsche engine should go for 4k max.Are there any up and coming sales?

Maybe we could do a group purchase then we would never complain about m96 again, just slot a new one in.

Mind you these guys do a rebuilt one for 4k... looks tempting

To buy an engine outright for an early manual 996 (-99) is £21,732.50 inc VAT. An exchange engine is £10,849.96.

For a later car (-03) it is £23,182.39 outright or £12,154.95 exchange. Until last year, the exchange price was £6461.55.

So it looks like the "subsidy" has finished.

Not that it helps but I think 997 exchanges are still well subsidised, but it doesnt look like there's any help for 996s anymore.

If the worst happens to mine, I will be going down the Autofarm Silsleeve route, with a bore-out to 3.8 or maybe 4 litres, so at least some good comes out of it. :D

Autofarm is where I ended up. Sillsleeve engine feels stronger and is running well after 2 years. Also you lose the usual 996 paranoia due to the modifications. Dont forget Hartech as well for lower cost solutions. I wasn't aware of them (way out of my area) when mine went.
