How to get a higher pitched exhaust sound?

Swop out the 200cell cats for standard ones, second hand sets should be available, that will be a long way to improving the sound given what you have said you want.

Cheekily, if you do decide to swap out your 200 cell cats - I would be interested in buying them!

Hi Asterix. Thanks for the suggestion, is the idea that the 200 cel cat makes everything louder or boomier? Or both?

All options are on the table at this stage - follow this thread!

I'm running Ebay headers, pse boxes and top gear 200 cell x pipe cats.

While I wouldn't necessarily say it screams like an f1 car, when I put the x pipe cats on the noise definitely went from tractor more towards f1. I would say it has a fruity howl now which is definitely down to the x pipe.

I'd love to send you some clips however my car Is still off the road following ims bearing failure last May. Its getting pretty tough staying positive after dropping the engine myself, having it rebuilt, fitting the engine now having to drop it out again after covering less than 300 miles. Anyhoo, that's a different story which I will update in due course. Worth a look at an x pipe....

Your dilemma is all our dilemmas , its always hard to make a German flat 6 sound like an F1 and those that have managed to get close seem to be the high end players in the exhaust market , the likes of Akrapovik etc.

some of what you have researched is on the right track and headers do make a difference partly due to shape and partly due to more sound from stainless steel. but do you want headers like the X51 three branches into a straight pipe or equal length into a merge collector . I found that the 996/997.1 engine was more (in your terms tractor) than the 997.2 with the DFI engine which is more high pitched. but still not what I would call F1 with that European high scream sound.

CGR that you have already reached out to did make a nice custom job for one of the 997.1 members on here. it was around the 2k mark. also have a chat to topgear exhausts as they also manufacture them.

also as mentioned TUBI has a nice sound on the 996

heres a nice one seems a mix of Kline/topgear and tubi .if you said to Topgear "I want that sound they would probably know what you needed. dont forget forum members get 10% discount from Topgear.

kline

also consider whether big bore 200 cell cats will give you more the tone you want than std bore 200 cell cats , again topgear can help with that as they make both options .

Lastly and as already mentioned INDUCTION the howl from a free flowing induction does play a part in creating the sound your after . have you fitted the resonator delete and silicon hose with a BMC sports filter , thats the minimum place to start then look at single or twin cone performance induction . you will almost certainly need a remap if you go with something like fabspeed performance twin cone induction.

heres what I mean this is a race prepped 996 with fabspeed exhaust and induction

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJc6It8v5is

but as Terry said whether any of it will be ok for the track db is another set of issues . but have a look at the vids as they may give you some thoughts and ideas :thumb: :thumb:

heres a vid of my 997.2 with 7k of exhaust and induction and its still not really an F1 sound ,so you may be chasing something thats you just cant fully achieve from the Porsche flat 6 engine.

Thank you so much for such a detailed response. Very helpful and i liked the sound of the Kline in the videos.

I do want to point out that when i say 'More F1 than Tractor on the Tractor to F1 scale' i am not looking for a Formula 1 sound. Rather that on a relative basis i am looking for less low end 'umph' or boomyness (difficult to put words on this right!) and a sound more balanced towards the high end. Still a flat 6 sound.

Sounds like you have done your homework on the subject - are there any onlie resources you could point me to, to help understand how each element affects power and sound? I am wondering if having performance headers and cats along with a customer oversized silencers might be the solution for me.

Thanks. Didn't realise x-pipes would smooth the sound out.
Sorry to hear about your engine issues - hope you get her back on the road and back to enjoying her shortly!

Yes, louder and throatier, went from PSE on my 3.4 to add 200cell Straight cats and I found much as you did, probably a little less so as PSE is not quite as loud as the aftermarket switchable systems

heres my thought to your questions
Re Power the two biggest single gains came from the 200 cell cats and then the IPD throttle body plenum with a remap. theres no doubt that the induction noise helps with the overall sound achieved , as others have said X Pipe is a smoother note than straight 200 cell cats and the big bore better still IMO , the headers add volume and crackles and pops but cant comment on whether stainless gives a higher pitched note than stock . I used a set of stainless X51 style headers from the states on my gen1 on the gen2 the headers and cats are a single piece unit. the bit I think may affect the boom more is the type of back boxes and I wonder if fitting 200 cell cats and headers but with mild sports boxes might give you less boom and a softer more shrill note. combine that with a nice induction kit for some deep air sucking in whoosh and you may be at the sound your after. I would highly recommend a call to topgear exhausts as they also know very well the Kline set up you like and may well be in a position agree that if you came down to their Dorset HQ for a fit they could put headers and 200 cell cats on and then try both the mild sport and the sound sport boxes giving you a change to hear both before deciding which you wanted to settle on . it means a run to Dorset and maybe paying for a little more fitting time but you should then be sure you have tried the options .

heres a very early pic of my 997.1 no other mods just the valved back boxes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az8rQLPjFfw

this vid is of member stabs car after he went down to Topgear and got them to fit the same set up that I had on my 997.1 which was headers, 200 cell big bore cats and valved sports boxes .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26fjqA6eUt8

hopefully the two vids will give you an idea of the sound difference between just the valved back boxes and the whole exhaust set up .

neither car in either video had any induction changes at that point

heres a vid of just the fabspeed induction sound with a stock exhaust
I know its on a 997.2 but its the induction note I wanted you to hear

@Phil 997 Very useful feedback and thanks for the videos , I think I get what you mean by induction noise.

Overall this thread has been really helpful and allowed me to better understand how some of the things interact.

On the back of people's comments here, I've watched quite a few videos to compare Straight vs X-pipe 200 cel cats and the x-pipes are clearly a big step in the direction I want to go in terms of exhaust pitch and smoothness. TopGear seem to be the guys to get these from in the UK so will call them at some point.

First step for me is going to be to have my silencers moded to bring overall noise down for track days. If this works well I will then change the cat to x-pipe, or alternatively one of the exhaust specialists I spoke to told me they can connect both existing cats to create the same effect as an x-pipe.

Thank you all for contributions here, all very helpful 🙌🏼

Hit me up if you are serious about this. I am very likely to go with x-pipe cats.
Cheers

UPDATE: i'll be trying the Top gear x-pipe so if anyone is looking for 200 Cell straight pipes my Dansk will be available for cheap!

Great to hear. Am happy to also offer to undercut the Kirssieg by 50%, for £6,000 fitted we will make it sound exactly how you want it within the DB limits  in fact I suspect we could do it for significantly less as a project the boys would love.

I'd give the X-Pipe cats a go first and see how you get on!
