Help with my 996.2 not starting

Thanks for that. The new battery is working perfectly well and the negative battery cable was replaced not long ago.

I am flying out now but I will try to get to the dealership to make an appointment for when I'm next back in a few weeks weeks so they can tow it. Fingers crossed they'll get to the bottom of it so I can actually drive it again.

I'll update this thread with details of the fix.

I'm so sorry i couldn't answer sooner .. my circumstances have now changed and i'm rarely online , pretty much weekends only these days .

Man maths never work with the wife im afraid lol .. a fault code readout would help though .

Technically .. it could be the starter , the starter relay or the ignition lock although that would be a rare fault .

Hopefully it's just that .

When it comes to battery replacement / jump start then i have to think about incorrect polarity connection or a surge .. in this case possibly a surge that has damaged the alarm control unit .. it's basically in immobilized state .

The garage will determine this but if there is the slightest possibility it could be an incorrect jump start .. X2 black leads for god's sake then please tell the garage .. it will save you several hundreds of pounds in diagnostic charges is all .

A bit brutal from me i know but being honest with a garage will be beneficial .. if not then i've been rude in suggesting this but i have seen this many times over the years but if i know then i know what control units need replacing as does any garage .

Hopefully though it's just a stuck starter relay .

Thanks everyone again. Well, I finally got the OPC abroad to collect the car and they said there was a burning smell so they will need to check all the wiring. They also said the DME was gone but to wait a few days for the wiring diagnosis to be completed before. I shall update again in a few days once I hear back from the OPC.

The place where you store it, is there any sign of rodents etc?

A nice dark dry undisturbed location with plenty of wiring to chew on is mouse heaven.

It's in a garage that's pretty much sealed and even dust doesn't get in.

Just had the call from the OPC, the wiring loom is all intact and they said I need to replace the DME at a cost of £2,500. Does anyone know why the DME would fail after I fitted a new battery? Is it a coincidence? I'm going to see them today to find out more and to pay the 50% charge before they will order the DME. There's only one OPC here hence the unique ordering practices.

Whist any electronic control unit can fail it's very rare .. the usual issue is a jump start which can cause an electric surge which can damage these .

A dme failure is into almost lottery numbers but it can happen .

There will be fault codes stating the dme is at fault i expect .

The OPC will be replacing this and on the slight off chance this isn't the fault then i would suggest you ask what the actual cause is before paying out for this and perhaps other items .

Jump starts can cause issues basically but a PCM failure is the most obvious sign as the fuse blows .

I've never seen a reconnection of a battery cause a DME failure though .

Thank you as ever for all your guidance. The car will be ready in a few weeks and I'll ask them this question. I'm looking forward to actually driving my car after a few years of it only being used to drive back and forth for the annual service.

Well, I finally collected my car and it's now driving perfectly. The DME was fitted and they also found a coolant pipe leak so they fitted a new coolant tank and did the annual inspection. I also fitted a new spare wheel and tyre. All in it came to £3,200. I've owned the car since 2009 and it's the first large bill I can remember so I'm just going to enjoy it now. Merry Christmas all.

Glad to hear it is sorted now.
Id be interested to know the details for your spare wheel/tyre. From previous research I couldn't find anyone selling the same size space saver tyre. The nearest size was a slightly larger profile than standard, & I wasn't sure if this would fit in the frunk space.

I bought the tyre and spare red alloy together, the one which fits under the cover in the front boot. The dealership out here told me I couldn't buy the items separately but I wanted to replace both anyway. It is part no 'P99636203001 Wheel Emergency' and the tyre is 'Continental T 105/95R17 90M'. I paid £296 equivalent for both.

Interestingly enough I was charged 65 pence (equivalent) labour to fit the alloy with the tyre in my car!

Thanks, unfortunately Porsche refuse to sell the tyre separately & force you to pay the premium for the whole spare wheel & tyre. The tyre itself should be fairly cheap, but the closest space saver I could find was a Continental T 115/95/17:

despite the age, my spare tyre looks fine, so I decided to stick with it for now as advised by the proprietor of my local tyre specialist.
