Carbon tequipement knob refurb

I have a carbon knob that's really badly cracked.
Tonight I decided I'd have a go at fixing it and if the worst comes to it, I'd paint the carbon black and the silver, well silver again.

The resin is very thick on these so I used my sander to rub it back and in doing so hit the carbon in 2 places. Not brutally bad but it's not gona be perfect. My new plan is to put a little black paint on the affected areas and rub it back before the laquer stage.

Has anyone gone through any of this process before?
Is it an epoxy I need or will rattle can laquer be good enough?

Also how fine a grit sandpaper do I need to go?
I'll do the final stages be hand

I guess you'd have to sand the lacquer back until the cracks disappear, which may be back to the carbon. I refurbed my alu/leather one, it was annoying I could not find a way of separating the alu insert, as it would have been less of a song and dance than masking and spraying with metallic silver paint as I did.

Ok so I was off to a very bad start when I hit the weave but I got this for nothing so I can't complain.
I sanded the silver down 3 light coats of high build primer, 4 coats of aluminium (Halfords rattle can) and then gave the whole thing plenty of coats of laquer.
Workmanship was a bit shite as after I hit the weave I didn't really care much, but the end results ok. Not brilliant by any stretch but good enough for what I need.

This is really helpful as I have the same cracking on my carbon steering wheel, and would like to try to fix it myself.

Is it 'just' a case of sanding back to the carbon and then applying clear coat and then lacquer, sanding back each coat as you go? Or is there much more to it than that?

Or given the work and how prominent the wheel is, is it better to let a pro sort it?

Thanks :)
