Black Frunk lid respray question

Hi all,

So,..my car was (stage 1 swirl removal) detailed recently, it is Basalt Black. Now I can see 5-10 small stone chip marks on the Frunk lid. I took the car to a local body shop who told me that the front wings also had to be painted at the same time so the paint can be "coz it has to be blended in properly!."

I have owned a few nice cars and can tell a resprayed panel when I see one so reluctant to go overboard..

There are minimal chips on the wings, and I don't want to have anything painted unnecessarily just in case they balls it up TBH.

My question is, does painting the Frunk lid on my black car always need the wings to be blended in aswell for the best finish, or is this bodyshop guy taking the Pi*s ? ...I feel it is the later as he then went on and quoted me £1200 for the work :)

Cheers

Steve

Way too much dude, Im just doing my PU and frunk in bassalt, as a precaution make sure they use a black wet on wet primer, that way the stonechips will be way less noticeable as you pick them up in future.
He is correct you should blend the colour into the front wings BUT ive always been lucky with Bassalt black or VW Black magic (same colour/code)

Bodyshops will usually always recommend a blend with a metallic colour, it`s an Insurance for them to ensure there is no colour mismatch.
It may be possible to get a good enough edge to edge match with black.
£1200 may sound expensive, is the bumper included ? it depends on how far they go with the prep, Will they strip the panel to bare metal, remove bumper, lights etc.
Material cost for top quality paint is likely to be £200 or more.
You will expect them to guarantee it for how long ?

All things to consider. Try and see some previous work.

Cheap is rarely good, and good is rarely cheap.

£1200 Is he adding 24 carat gold lol . I just had Wicked Coatings in Poole Dorset do my engine lid and gt3 spoiler also my front bumper and they didn't blend anything as I only gave them the items to paint. mine is midnight blue metallic so as you can imagine it would show if not a good match. they use very good products apply a decent amount and a good coating of good quality lacquer. in there words "to achieve the deep finish they work very close to the edge" and in my case had to do my engine lid and spoiler 3 times before it passed their QC. I cannot see any difference between the old and new.and I would expect them to charge you half of your other quote.I think the difference is they are not a body shop they are a paint and coating specialist. give them a call the MD is called Lyle he will happily discuss your needs
I hope that helps.

I'd have thought for 2 wings and the lid - £600 all in.

Sprayers wanting to do extra work so it matches are bumping the cost up for their incompetence if you ask me.
The only way to guarantee a perfect match all over is to do the whole car.

If the wings don't need spraying, just get the bonnet done, although I'd be finding somewhere that inspired me with a bit more confidence and realistic price. :?:

If he has to do wings surely he has to do PU as well.
Its worth asking what materials he is using, especially the laquer as this can vary wildly in price/quality, the laquer im using on mine is expensive but very long lasting and chip resistant.

I didn't realise that some were chip resistant, now I need to find what was used on my front bumper. Thanks for the heads up it's worth knowing for the future.

I didn't know that either, thanks.

Bumper wasn't included in the quote, I think it was already done as looks in good shape. Thanks for the input guys. I agree, he must see the car and add £400 to the quote. :hand: I will ask the local OPC who they use and get a quote direct.

Congrats Johnny

So how is he going to colour match to PU if he cant to wings? :dont know:

:yeah:

I had a paint quote for my front end getting painted. New wings and bumper but no bonnet as I have a carbon bonnet to replace it. I was told they need to blend the wings into the doors and I was quoted £2250. This is a Porsche approved paint sprayer. (Road & Race Manchester. This is who Wilmslow OPC use I believe)

Im just going to do PU and Frunk and splitter, I did wings last time but they have no chips and its the same paint.

Did they blend in the wings into the doors when you had them painted?
