997 GT3 braided brake lines and solid engine mounts

Yeh but what would Ramsey do? :)

You probably won't get an answer today - he will be blatting across Europe in his 993 today (his GT3 is going by truck) for the BaT Italy days next week...

After a rather excellent drive down to Mugello in the GT2 (1680 miles - I did go the scenic route through France so the trip took 4 days) & a brilliant day at Mugello with the usual suspects yesterday, I now find myself in an extremely pleasant 5-star hotel with a bit of time to kill before dinner & Imola beckons tomorrow so I thought I'd reply :)

Engine mounts: Jon is correct, you shouldn't use solid mounts in a road car unless you enjoy being deaf, are looking for a reason to turn your car into something you actively avoid driving and are willing to suffer cracked engine carriers on a regular basis. The Cup carrier is a different design for a reason & even they can & do crack.
My mounts are 993RS and have done a sterling job in conjunction with the front 997.2 RS gearbox mount. I don't believe you need more than this.

Braided lines: I had Goodridge lines on mine since I bought it until earlier this year when one of the front ones developed a very slight weep, only evident if you stood on the pedal for several seconds. The hose had NO external damage to the braid, it had simply failed internally. The issue I have with OEM hoses is that such damage would never show up until it became much worse because the hose is encased in rubber which conceals it. Mine was obvious when we changed the brake calipers & bled the system.

The hoses were all replaced by custom fabricated ones from a supplier who normally fabricates hoses for the F1 teams. They were cheaper than Goodridge and I plan to simply life them at 3 years in future so that the problem hopefully never arises.

If I was forced to buy off the shelf, I'd probably go for Hel as they are better quality than Goodridge imo.

Finally, my surname is spelt with an "A" (the Scottish way), not "E" the English way. There are not many of us & I like to keep the numbers up (even if Gordon is one of us)

Damn, I even checked my emails and still typed it wrong...

I've decided on these parts -

http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod13361/Porsche-Carrera-RS-Engine-Mount-96437504381/

http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod126227/Porsche-997-Engine-Gearbox-Mount-99737503303/

(I think that's the Gearbox mount that you meant Nick?)

Regards the brake lines, the HEL website has some interesting Porsche model options

http://www.brake-lines.co.uk/automotive/porsche/

990? 998?

I called them this morning and spoke to them, but the chap couldn't advise which part I ought to buy for a 997 GT3 :?:

So I'll probably go with the Goodrich lines instead from D911, with the 911uk09 code I'll get a Brucey bonus 5% off.

... Or should that be BrucAy bonus....

Interesting choice.

From what I can see your replacing like for like on the gear box mount. Why do that? Also upgrading this part is something I wouldn't recommend unless your willing to put up with the extra noise. Nick R has the 4.0 RS mount.

The engine mounts are for a 993 / 964 so will need to be adapted I believe as they have a round bolt not a square ended bolt as on your car. So it will need to be modded to fit. Go with RSS or Wevo and they will fit out of the box.

.... I give up, I'm leaving the car alone!

Ok to try and help here, IMO upgrading the engine mounts doesn't make much difference in terms of cabin noise. I used the RSS offerings, but have also heard good things about the Wevo product. Don't go with solid (Rennline) product go with uprated polymer ones. Nick R has the 993 RS ones as at the time others weren't on the market. Don't expect a massive improvement in the gear changing as this product is more about stopping the engine pendulum effect while taking chicanes fast.

If you want to improve the feel of the gear lever / change, look at cup cables and numeric shifter or cae shifter. Not done the cables myself as told noise can be an issue, but opinions vary on that one.

None of this will vastly change the feel, but will improve on standard.

Gear box mount upgrade is the last bit of the jigsaw, does improve the changing but another small step. Down side they increase cabin noise a lot. I've tried 3 different types of polymer stiffness and can say even the softest after market ones are extreme.

Happy hunting

CAE shifter is still on the cards, was thinking that might be nice Christmas prezy for the car. I emailed Wevo today to ask about all inclusive costs and lead times for the engine mounts, will take things from there. Sounds like changing one thing at a time is the way to go :thumb:

Try Tarett Engineering, good company to deal with. The RSS units are basically the same thing, and I won't hold it against you

http://www.tarett.com/items/996-997...rical/semi-solid-964-993-eng-mount-detail.htm

Gear box mounts if you decide to go what way. Theses are what I have in at the moment. The web page is wrong there not 60A as advertised there 70A.

http://www.tarett.com/items/996-997...-mount-insert-ea-996-997-cm-gt3tmi-detail.htm

Or they have now started doing theses inserts. Mite be worth a go, but I'd do a search on Rennlist to find some feed back first

http://www.tarett.com/items/996-997...-mount-insert-ea-996-997-cm-gt3tmi-detail.htm

I mite even give these ago, new to the market also good company to deal with

I'm now wondering...

The car is almost 8 years old and lots of bushes and mounts and things could probably do with a bit of a refresh

Is there some sort of replacement 'bush kit' available, if I'm putting in new engine mounts then that's probably going to put greater stress on any non-upgraded / non-refreshed parts :?:

Is this an issue? Should I upgrade any other parts if updating the engine mounts?

Ps the Wevo mounts are about £100 more than the RSS, not sure they're £100 better?

Please be very careful when using a company such as Hel for your brake hoses. I have recently seen issues with several aftermarket suppliers within my own projects and also projects at work.

A couple of recent examples are:
- Hel recommending on one of their aftermarket hose kits to use a copper washer to seal on a non-spot faced surface rather than supplying the correct conical fitting to match the OE sealing method. When questioned their response was less than reassuring and I reverted back to the OE hose.
- A well known aftermarket hose supplier demonstrated that they clearly did not understand the design of their components, their interaction and the swaging process resulting in leaks and a hose failure. This caused us major issues as it was being used on the hydraulic system on the active aero system of a car.

In my opinion I would now only use a supplier who understands and engineers these fittings and their assembly such as Goodridge or FHS and supply hoses to OE manufacturers. The rest just seem to buy bits and bobs cheap from China and throw them together without understanding how complex swaging these fitting together can be. In some cases I have seen a hose that looks perfect on the outside, but which has split the teflon pipe and deformed the fitting through over crimping/clamping of the ferrule.

I guess you pay your money and take your chance.

Collected the RSS mounts from RPM today :thumb:

They look damn sexy, can't wait to get them fitted and see what difference they make to the handling.

Apparently RSS have gone bust and I got the last set of these mounts in the country :dont know:

Hmm, I'm not holding out much hope for a huge leap in performance then, perhaps a quantum leap?

I had the RSS mounts fitted last week :thumb:

... Still not had a chance to take the car out for a spin yet though ... will report back once I've been for a nice drive somewhere
