Porsche Approved Warranty - coverage limitations

I have a 2013 991.1 C2S which I purchased in January this year. I picked it up from a Porsche Centre with an Porsche Approved Warranty for 2 years.

Popped the car into my local OPC last week for a couple of items that I wanted looking at.

The thing that finally pushed me to book it in is the drivers side wing mirror glass had worked loose, flapping around in the breeze above 50mph to the point it was hanging out of the wing mirror. I was able to save it before it dropped and smashed. Looked like the adhesive had failed - simple fix with some double sided tape I imagine, but given I wanted to take the car in for some other things I left it with OPC to sort that, too. And of course, I made the naive assumption the warranty would cover the wing mirror.

Surprised to discover that the wing mirror glass was not considered as covered on the P warranty. OPC charged me £196.69 for the work (apparently it required a part). Rest of the work I took it in for was covered under warranty.

Now 100% my bad for not underlining and confirming that before I 'authorised' the work - although in my defence it wasn't explictly spelt out to me it would be a chargeable item against the backdrop of other FOC warranty covered items, either.

But does that sound right to everyone here? Mirror glass dropping out due to failed adhesive not considered a warranty item? Is that 'wear and tear'? First wing mirror I've ever had fall out in 20+ years of driving!

I see no mention of that in the exclusions on https://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/vehicleinformation/approvedwarranty/ although that list is perhaps non-exhaustive.

Have reached out to the P salesman who sold me the car (different OPC) for his view, so just after your perspectives and experiences to see if I should invest any time in pursuing this or not (assuming there is anything to pursue!).

Not on the war path here. End of the day it's £200 -- and if I'm wrong, I will be more cautious of the way my OPC operates around warranty work in the future and chalk that up as a lesson learned.

But I can't shake the feeling I should have just 3M taped it up and saved myself some cash

I followed your link and agree its not mentioned in the list of excluded items. However I would check the detailed T&C as probably listed that trim, or body work (or similar) is not covered and that will be the get out.

If its not excluded in the T&C, then I suspect you may have a valid claim for reimbursement. Difficult one though as might come down to some ones interpretation of what is trim etc...

I dug out the paperwork I signed - interestingly bodywork is listed as a "covered" item in the case of a "manufacturing defect".

The "not covered" list I linked to is reproduced in the document too, but additionally refers to it as a "exhaustive" list. Wing mirror glass not called out there.

...tricky old game isn't it. Says so much and also says nothing

What was the OPC's explanation / rationale as to why it was not covered by the warranty?

In the case of the glass falling out its either a failure of the part by defect or wear/tear/damage

I think you would have strong case for warranty to cover if there is no obvious damage. This should be done before any work is carried out.

My front side marker lamp in the bumper had condensation and when i had a look the weld had failed, OPC replaced without any discussion (The bumper hadn`t been hit) so I have faith in the warranty :)

*always* ask for justification as multiple times I was going to be charged for stuff covered by warranty. Not sure if this expectation is owners just pay regardless.

Glass falling out of its housing is a manufacturing fault as it shouldn't happen at all, let alone after only 9 years.

Manufacturing faults are covered by the warranty so I'd definitely not let it drop. Call 'Porsche Cars GB' at Reading and get their warranty specialist involved.

Agree absolutely - should be covered. This happened to me on my 2011 Golf, adjusted the mirror glass on a dual carriage-way, glass fell out and before I could slow down it shattered while hanging from the wires. Caused damage to the paintwork which I wouldn't have been at all happy with if it was the 911 :nooo:
