Agreed. There is always a risk but that can be mitigated to some extent. I was going to get my car borescoped but quite a few independent Porsche PDI companies are not offering this service now due to risk of come back.
A way of judging if a 996 has got a problem is doing a cold (left overnight) startup and watching for any initial smoke. There should be none and after a few seconds the cold start condensation should appear from the exhausts, let it warm and then check again for any smoke with a few revs. Also check for any soot on left hand exhaust tip. This simple test can tell you a lot along with any other odd noises such as lifters ticking or chains rattling. I'm probably preaching to the knowledgeable now, my apologies.
My car seamed exceptionally quiet and well behaved from a cold start. I may be crying in my beer in a few months time
