Fitting electric power steering

Does anyone know what the hose ends at the rack are? I've emailed ZF/TRW to ask them, but no joy.

I also found this site in the US: https://www.technafitstore.com/Rack-Fittings-s/30587.htm

Perhaps one of those fittings is appropriate?
(This is for me rather than Ned, as he'd rather not use AN fittings, whereas I think I would prefer to, so that I can use entirely new fittings.)

...the pump valving, weighting etc will influence steering feel, will it not ? There will be an engineered synergy between the respective steering components which equate to the sensation experienced at the wheel...

Fiddling with this will corrupt this critical Porsche feature...can't see that a substitution involving a Vauxhall zafira part is going to improve it :dont know:

More pics on that car!!

Just to add, as this may help someone. I did a similar thing on a Golf VR6 about 12 years back. I ditched the standard pulley driven PAS pump and went for a Saxo/106 electric pump, it lays flat, rather than upright like the Vauxhall ones. The fluid bottle is remote also, so this pump was really good for being able to be hidden away and having the fluid bottle somewhere sensible. Had it connected to a switch so I could turn it off as and when required.

Pipes were made by Pirtek. Can't remember the relay, running a 20amp fuse.

Hope that's of some use to anyone looking for an alternative pump. :thumb:

Crap pic of the pump, but you get the idea.

And the blue thing is a steering quickener made by Quaife

I see. I thought that you maybe had a remote fuel tank I tried the pump in the battery position last night but it sits a little to high so the bonnet wouldn't close.

Martin the pipe fittings for the rack are a push in style. Not like anything else so they're expensive from the states. $90. I'm going to get Pirtek or someone to join onto my existing rubber hose and just make a low pressure hose myself for the return

None of those listed are correct for the rack end, one of them would work for the pump.

The rack side are Porsche specific, picture below shows the shape of what you need, with the acception of cutting up the OEM pipes, Rebel racing were the only items I could find.

I remember toying with the idea of doing this with my engine swapped 205 gti.

Ironically the plan there was to remove weight from the front and relocate to the back as it could be mounted under the boot.!

On a slightly different note, has anyone fitted this and been able to fit the spare wheel? My spare is coming out but it's more of a precaution for going on a long run.

Does the Carrera 4 have a spare?

Thanks crash 7. I think my most economical way of getting the hose ends will be with cutting the ends of my old hoses off and having new AN fittings welded on, as per one of the photos. I have a welding shop very close by who will do small jobs like that for £15 and their quality is excellent.

Martin I work in a small engineering shop but I'm going to try the hose specialists first. I should know more in cost tomorrow as I'm hoping to get it sorted after work. I'm going to mount the pump below the abs pump on the passenger side as I saw a picture of another that had very basic brackets but still looked reasonably tidy. I think it was on aivars post on Facebook. It leaves a little floor space below which is probably useless but I want a tiger finish than just sticking it on the floor. I'll also hope get the carpet back on nice and tidy to finish it off though I haven't spent that much time measuring up. I can always make brackets to suit whatever I need.

I've chosen the passenger side simply as it's an easier route for the pipe work. The original pipes run across that way so it dosnt disturb the original pipes coming from the rack.

I've a lot on this weekend so it'll probably be next week before I get at it again.
I've no intention of looking at the wiring end of things until I'm well in with the build. I just want the steering in now so I can build up the rest of the front suspension etc and move on.

Good news today. I went to get the new pipe sorted. I tool the rack and pump with a rough measurement of 700mm of new pipe needed. This was for cutting the original rubber pipe and running right to the pump.

The hose guy wasn't keen on this. Instead he wanted to cut the metal pipes as he said they would be easier and better. I didn't argue. As this was the case, I only needed about 300-350mm of pipe. Not sure about this as I was caught in the hop but I can get a new piece easily if the size doesn't work.

The cost?

That's the best bit. £18 including a length of pipe for the return.

Can't be bad at that. It's still in the boot of the car sill get a picture up when I get some
