Engine cuts out - intermittent - 997.1 (2008) C4S manual cab

Hi
I have had my current car for 3 years now and only in the last few months the engine has started to cut out when it's at normal operating temperature.

Sometimes it cuts out when the car is stationary at traffic lights - not always re-starting straight away (rather embarrassing when there is a queue behind!).

Other times while driving - the dash will light up like a christmas tree and the revs drop to zero briefly but because the car is moving, the engine fires again and continues to run - but in 'limp mode'. The engine will not then do more than c.3000 rpm. And, the tacho is twitchy i.e. not reading the engine revs properly.

Pulling over, stopping the engine for a couple of minutes then re-starting the engine seems to reset the engine's 'brain' and the problem hasn't recurred during the remainder of a journey.

On one occasion when the car steadfastly refused to re-start, I called a breakdown service. They diagnosed crankshaft sensor failure (this happened on my previous 996 C2S).

The car was then transported to a specialist Porsche garage. They ran a full diagnostic, informed me there was nothing wrong with the crankshaft sensor but, I needed a new alternator as it was barely putting out 12v (should be 14.3v apparently!). And, no error codes had been lodged in its 'brain'. £899 later...

The engine cutting out is still happening... the last occurrence was yesterday while doing 30 mph.

There are a number of threads on this 911UK site regarding engines cutting out but, I'm not experiencing any of their symptoms e.g. dirty fuel/tank, fuel pump, plugs & coil packs (replaced recently), MAF, loud clicking/relay sounds, etc...

Has anyone else had similar problems and found a solution?
Any suggestions would be very welcome.
