996 or a boxster??

It's always worth shopping about at the specialists as there are more ways than one of doing this job. I wouldn't like to attempt replacing the AOS without at least dropping the engine part way down, that carries it's own set of issues & tasks.

Just to give the OP even more choices... You can get an aftermerket AOS for quite a bit less than the OEM one from here

I have one of these ready to be fitted and the quality seems fine though I can't say if it will be any more or less reliable than Porsches offering

I'm no expert on the AOS but a 15 minute read on various forums & sites including this one and I know all I need to know.

Alex, you're still arguing from a perspective of no personal experience with this particular fix. Sure, it's good to check assumptions, prices and explore differing perspectives.

But for the sake of saving a tiny amount of money vs guaranteeing it is done properly I'm struggling to see what benefit you are suggesting the OP is going to get by going down the route you suggest? :?:

BTW - my own car was repaired and ready for me this AM and I would be more than happy to recommend Porsche Torque to anyone who asked.

FYI - AOS letting go isn't always a small concern

http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=95475&highlight=aos+fooled

and it can go at any time, not just when it's 'worn'.

I've read posts where AOSs have failed under 10k.

You're right new996buyer, I have no personal experience, so the best advice I can give, which I think you'll agree with is:

sportline - start a new thread called something like 'AOS replacement - help urgently needed!!!!' and ask the same questions again, I guarantee you'll get a much wider response than just 3 or 4 of us and also from people who have experience in getting theirs replaced. People will see the 996 vs boxster thread heading and not even read this.
I'd also be PMing the people who've had it done for £400 / £447 on here and ask them what process was done and location of the garage.

Back to the saving of a few quid, if the OP saves £200 everytime he gets a job done, he can stick it in a pot ready for his C4S or TT or 997.

I've fallen for this today, the prices are dropping like leaves at the moment: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...7/2006-porsche-carrera-c2s-manual-997/3105862

As can a lot of things.. with the aos if its on its way its more likely to go as i found out. Get it sorted as its pretty scary when it goes

Holy Moly, 997 C2's for 17k (or less)...that is 'cheap'...pittance almost :D

I suppose the good thing with buying an early 997 is that when everyone on the internet says 'ooooh...997...bore scoring, IMS and the end of the universe' you can just say that you've had a 996...you are used to potential eternal doom.

I just noticed my neighbour has bought a very nice 997 C4S cabrio so I might ask to have a look at the inside, curious to compare interior quality.

Aftually I don't agree. I think there's enough info on the thread for him to make up his mind. It's his choice, not ours after all

Btw, the plummet in 997 values is seriously tempting. I love my turbo but I'm also a huge fan of NA cars. Hmmmmmmmm :chin:
