993 Targa roof problems

Hi all.

My beautiful 1987 993 Targa is suffering from a couple of roof issues and I've finally decided to take the plunge and get them resolved. I'd happily take any suggestions of where to go...

Firstly, the sun visor failed about 8 years ago. The little pulley things, one on each side, still move along the tracks just below the roof but they no longer pull the sun visor with them. I did get this fixed, twice, in the space of about 2 years, but when it failed again I thought I'd just leave it - let's face it, in Essex you don't need a sun visor that much!

Secondly, about 6 months ago I heard constant whistling and squeaking when on the move from the glass roof and upon closer inspection, realised that one side (the near-side) was decidedly more "flappy" that the other side of the glass roof when partially open. It turns out that there's a small white (or silver - it's hard to see!) block attaching the glass roof to the pulley bit that moves it along, and it seems that that block, or the bolt connecting that to the roof or to the pulley, has failed.

My usual servicing guy has told me he's not done this before and can give me no indication of how long it would take to dismantle the trim along the front and side/s of the roof to get to that bit, replace it and rebuild everything and therefore can't give me any idea of cost.

I've decided, if I'm gonna get the glass roof fixed, I may as well also get the sun visor fixed once and for all - I'm considering upgrading to a 997 (NOT a Targa!) so I think these problems would be expected to have been fixed.

I'm in the South Essex area (Billericay) so would like to find someone close-ish capable of doing the work and, hopefully, someone who won't charge the earth to do so as I'm assuming this will be an expensive job. I'm thinking of just running it up to Porsche Colchester but I know that would be the most expensive option so would appreciate any suggestions or advice...

Thanks all.

Recently saw a 993 Targa having a full roof system rebuild at Pie Performance (Porsche specialists located near Lavenham, Suffolk) ... might be worth a call to see if they can help ?

PIE would be a good bet, and if they've done one recently would get my vote over the other local indies. Also around this neck of the woods are ADH in Rayne, Terry at Autostrasse in Coggeshall and fairly new Adam Reason Porsche just north of Ipswich.

I know Autostrasse - used to take my 3.2l carrera up there. I've not tried PIE. I may take a look at them.

Thanks guys.

I have done a couple of targa roof control units repairs for PIE Performance, they would have experience in diagnosing and repairing this.
Cheers,
Tore

You will be opening a can of worms, if you go for it. If you are likely selling in any case, I would question the logic. When I did it, I thought I was keeping the car forever.

Wasn't there a long and informative write up on this by someone who used Precision Porsche, who are based in Sussex.
