987 Cayman has gone. 986 project starts

Update - We spent another day trying to get her going, went over all of our work making sure we hadn't missed anything. Used Borescope to reseat the injectors along with the proper paste for the job. No joy.

Arranged for 'Mobile Porsche Specialists' to come and do OBD, they agreed, wasted 9 days of our lives, to then cancel 24 hours before the appointment. MisterCorn kindly stepped up and sent us his Durametric, error codes for things I would expect, nothing for the engine.

Then me deMort suspected no fuel pressure, we brought a gauge and saw no residual psi when attached the gauge to the system, and only 20 psi when we crank. Iain says we should be looking for nearer 45psi.

So now we have a new pump, new sender seal and new filter to go in. Fingers crossed! Link to other thread where we're trying to get her fixed, which has also turned into a bit of a Mod details thread:

2023 Job List

- Get her running after the 987/997 intake mods.
- Exhaust manifold replacement at Precision.
- Wayne to map in all of the engine mods.
- Remove A/C, currently bypassed by shorter poly belt.
- Replace reverse switch on gearbox.
- Repair drivers seat where fabric has come away.
- Lock the rear fin up as per American BSR series.
- Locate alarm gremlins (if I can be bothered, workaround works)
- 997 Turbo Rear Brake Duct Mod
- Windscreen wiper arm refresh
- Plexi side windows?
- Find out what new noise is in engine bay post TD.
- Mate selling his 986 is selling me his 'Factory Detune Retune' kit.
- Fuel filter
- Polish tarnished paint on rear boot lid.
- Headlight lens refresh with Meguiars kit.

There are precious little exhaust manifold options for the 986 these days, especially the 3.2 it seems. Without spending thousands, there is only one option, Gravity to match the de-cat pipes.

I'm driving her down to Precision on the 8th March for them to fit them.

Getting there Marty! Keep ticking those jobs off.

That's a smart 997 further up the page. 8)

Hopefully the fuel pump will sort your issues and you're good to go in time for spring. :thumb:

Cheers for responding on my lowly 986 thread, Marky 8)

Not being able to run the car past 3k does suck a bit. Mani and tune cant come quickly enough!

Yeah it has houndstooth interior and a ducktail, is it a special, the name of which escapes me?!

p.s. you're here for one of the best 986 in the country, not for some pesky 997 love

Ha, don't be daft mate. Nothing lowly about it. We're all on here for the tinkering and adventures, regardless of which flavour. :thumb:

Hey Coullstar, thanks for your post.

This car represents something that no other car I have ever had has done. My Cayman before for example, was such a minter and so rare with it's colour and options and 911v provenance, I didn't want to touch it.

With this though, I am not precious, I've got proper hands on and have really been enjoying the project. Car is a keeper, tons of fun and punches above her weight on Track.

As for A/C, funnily enough, mine stopped working a week or two into ownership. I bypassed the compressor a couple of years ago and have been lugging around the weight ever since. I do aim to get the Trackdays in in the Spring or late Summer in order to avoid the really hot days. Black cars huh, who'd have one!

Weight saving wasn't massive, but less parasitic draw on the belt, weight saving and better airflow to the rads.... oh and one less item to replace every few years when the condensers rot out.

Car at Precision now for the manifold. Pleasure to see Jonny again, missed the big man DeMort however.

Spot of lunch and choo spotting washed down with a pint of local ale.... then train back to The Bridge.

Car has been to Wayne the Wizard for his magical touch. 300 horses ended up a pipe dream, came out with 284bhp, so 34 over where she should have been from factory. 36 lb/ft more torque too.

Need to do a proper write up of my ChipWizard experience, what a day, a long day. Set off at 5a.m. ended up getting back at 10:35p.m.

Turned out IPD is junk, as the good man had said, also that the 986 TB and plenum delivered the best power, torque and least dip, as he had said.

He said I need to check my driveshafts though as he could feel a strange vibration. Which isn't great news with a TD booked for 1st April.

Many thanks to Wayne and Precision for all their hard work :thumb:

Thanks Tim, she really is pulling well. Booked in for Snetterton this weekend but forecast is grim, where the bloody hell is the Spring?
