Good morning guys and girls after many years of saving I finally got my 996 turbo .as a newbie to this type of car I wanted to put this out there and ask for any advice.
my car has had a new engine turbos etc the gearbox has been rebuild and a Sachs clutch fitted ,also new bilstien suspension with new control arms so its a car that's been looked after .
I have a clattering noise ,its in the lower gears this noise starts low down in the revs clatter its pretty loud then it clears around 2500 so as long as the revs are above 2500 is ok but round town and off roundabouts you get the clatter then it clears .ive been told its could be the way I drive it and they need to rev ?
it also has a noise power steering pump could any of this be connected .
its my first 996 so could do with any advice .

Dave

Welcome to the Turbo club.

I'm no expert, but I know it certainly won't be the way you're driving it! It sounds like it's probably a loose heat shield or something similar that's being affected by certain frequencies generated by the engine at lower rpms. Try having a look under the car whilst it's running (maybe have a friend with a functional right foot help you) and see if you can get the rattle to repeat so that you can narrow down the location.

I had a strange rattle on mine that sounded a bit like an air cooled engine under load. It also would come and go; in the end 9e diagnosed loose exhaust manifold nuts so replaced them all. It wasn't cheap because there's a fair bit of labour involved, but on the plus side it must have helped to generate stronger boost as the car flew afterwards.

:welcome: to 911uk

As per the above. I experienced similar rattles early on in my 996T ownership and it was all down to the heatshields being loose.

A whining noise from the pump ( pas ) is either a leak and the oil has aerated or the pump has run dry previously and is damaged ..

Its a case of further investigation for a garage im afraid .

Your clattering noise .. if possible do a sound clip and either youtube post it and link here yourself or feel free to email it to me and ill do it .

Once again though it will probably need an Indy to have a look to diagnose it .

It's a 911 thing but does seem more prevalent on turbo cars. It's to do with where the oil settles when the car is left standing.

Sometimes they barely puff at all but sometimes they can embarrass you terribly with big clouds of smoke. As long as it stops soon afterwards, don't worry. :thumb:

It's so good to read this, mine did it a few times after id just started and moved it a few times. I absolutely panicked and called a Porsche mate who said the same.
From owning many b5 rs4's this was pretty much always a sign the turbo's were gone or on their way out.
Its always nice to see it written down to just confirm it again.
Its crazy though as occasionally it really can smoke then other times nothing. I'm sure this will have panicked many turbo owners in the past

Mine does it very occasionally too. Two situations make it more likely. One is if I park on the drive for 1/2 hr or so then put it in the garage before its cooled down, it may then do it on the next start, and the other is if I leave it on a slope.

I'm sure it knows when there's an audience and does it then too, well it seems like that anyway

Couple of other thoughts, are you aware that these engines are famous for making intermediate shaft noise at tick over and up to 2.5k revs. If you do a search for 996 turbo intermediate shaft noise there are lots of vids to compare, also the flywheel can make some noise at low revs too. Noises are always hard to figure out on a forum as people describe differently thats why a clip is always good as deMort says

No I wasn't I'll take a look at the clips mine is getting worse ! I had the boot to open and started it last week from cold and I heard the belt squeal than what I think was a bearing clatter from the alternator so could be something simple ,it's my first 996 so I'm a bit paranoid and think the worse . Once the Teck tells me what it is I can just get it fixed it's just a bit embarrassing when you pull away from junctions or traffic lights it's an horrible noise.
I'm glad it seems they all puff a bit of smoke guys how do you find oil use ? And what do you use I'm putting 5w 40 .

+1 for deMort's highly tuned diagnostic ears. He correctly identified a blowing exhaust from my video, which I'm fixing now. A mechanic's stethoscope is a very handy bit of kit to have at identifying noises.

I've always found Mezgers to sound very mechanical, GT3s are even worse.

All part of the charm for me.

So it looks like the issue is the left hand bank timing chain tensioner has failed and that causing the rattle.ao it's engine out to fix the fault
I'm glad it's under warranty

Well, I'm happy you found it, happy it's under warranty and happy with my diagnostic skills. I read through the thread and was about to post "does it sound louder on one side of the car than the other? If so, timing chain is a common cause" then I saw the last post.

Get them to have a look at rev range 2 for how many ignitions in overrev and when it last recorded one.

P.s. to avoid smoke, avoid running the car for short durations and turning it off cold. The dry sump doesn't scavenge oil so well until it's got a little temperature, more sits in the engine and can make its way into the cylinders when you stop the engine, so if you just move the car on the drive, chances are it'll smoke next time you start it.

However, doing it occasionally has been happening with my car since I first had it over 50k miles and 12 years ago. She's still purring along, I would avoid putting thicker oil in it as some specialists advise. Stick to the 0-40 Mobil 1. It's a very good oil.
