Right this topic may be a bit confusing, but I'm sure I will gain some information here.
The car is a manual.

I have acquired a 997 gear knob and want to put it into a 996. So firstly will it fit straight in, knowing that some parts was interchangeable on the two models.

Secondly I am currently looking for a short shift. So won't fit the new gear knob until I fit this.
I was thinking if the shifter under a 997 gator is the same as a 996. That way I won't have to modify the knob and just buy a 997 short shift.
Knowing my luck it won't be that easy

Thanks for the help

997 ssk is all that is needed as far as i know. No doubt some one will confirm or deny

its a good mod and helps improve the feel of the gear change

quite a popular mod for bmws and one I did too that I thought was a great mod was a ssk coupled with a weighted gear knob as it made it more direct and took out the notchiness of having the ssk on its own
is there any oe gearknobs that are heavier than others for the 996?

from what i've read, the 997 (or 997 short shifter) drops straight into the 996. it's one of my mods to do as i have a small amount of slack in my stick.

So a 997 shortshift kit from say schnell or bmc will fit a 996 then the 997 gearknob and gator will fit that.

997 shifters definitely fit 996. You have 3 main choices:
- Standard 997 shifter reduces throw by ~15%, and v slick
- 997 GT3 shifter reduces throw by 15%, and has metal bushes
- Standard 997 SSK reduces throw by ~35%

I had a 996 SSK and didn't like it, so went for option 1, which I'm really happy with.

Gear nob wise, the 997 nob itself will fit the 996 or 997 shifters I think, but the gator surround won't fit the 996 console. Pretty sure I've read that you can use the 996 gator with the 997 nob, but google to check (and watch for colour match).

Part numbers:
- 997 Stock: 997.424.010.00
- 997 GT3 (2010 on - metal bushes): 997.424.010.91
- 997 Short Shift: 997.424.983.00

Im going to be treating me/my car to the gt3 metal bushes one later this year but the wife wants a new car first.

Quick question gents, my 996TT has a short shift kit fitted by a previous owner, now how do I figure out if it's an ebay special or something else? Thew previous owner prior to me didn't fit it as far as I'm aware.

Pop the gearstick gator off (it just unclips) and have a peer inside.

If it uses bright blue plastic, its probably the official 997 SSK one shown above.

If it looks like the one in the link below (black metal with Porsche Tequipment logo), its the official 996 SSK:

If its something else (e.g. anadonised blue metal), its probably an aftermarket job.

so it sounds like the 997 gt3 is the one to go for.
Is Suncoast the best place to buy one of these or is there a place over here in the uk

cheers

I think opc sell them.

Replaced my 50k 996 standard shifter with a 25k 997 shifter which was better
Then bought a new 997 gt3 shifter from OPC this is the best of the lot quite a difference, shorter, precise and solid. Best money I have spent on my C4S :thumb:
