Soooo, my friend calls me yesterday and says he's thinking of swapping his 2009 C4S coupe..... Not for a 991 cab as planned but..... wait for it..... another marque!

We were supposed to be going on a driving holiday next summer, in Porsches, now we will have an outsider in the ranks.

This is tantamount to heresy. What do I do? Do we disown him? Do a Top Gear and decorate his car on the road trip?

On a more practical note, he's looking at the Ferrari California. Would this make a good change following his aforementioned car or is there something else you would go for? Budget is up to 90k

One of my friends also took the Ferrari route, but had the forethought to keep his turbo to avoid being disowned.

(You listening, Chimp)

I have to say his prancing horse is both

A) gorgeous to look at

B) amazing to drive

Perfect for a roadtrip, it will improve your aural and visual experience.

Nothing wrong with a change. For £90k I really like the 599 GTB with the fantastic Enzo engine in it and over 600hp.

If you have the funds to support one then there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Ferrari.

have best of both worlds - two different cars, two different experiences.
The route is to do a chimp - have both.

Chris Harris had a 599 GTB but he said it was massivley expensive to maintain and didn't keep it long.

As for the Fezza, the Gen 1 California was given very bad reviews by pretty much everyone. The new one has had better reviews but I'm not sure I'd buy the first one. They are beautiful though.

I do like the idea of a few Top Gear style car swaps along the way....

I've suggested Aston on Jag F-type routes and spend the extra cash on sex and drugs, not sure he's having it though.... :dont know:

In a price bracket up to £90k, I'd recommend a good 430 - and he will have cash left over as a slush fund. The older Fezza's such as 550 Maranello offer full 4 seater comfort but still expect to pay aropund £70k for a good 'un. £70k will buy a more modern 430 with fewer hours service time.

The 458 Italia sadly is ay out of hs league but a lovely car - budget? Around £170k - £180k.

The older Fezza's are fetching silly money - and its old technology, corrosion can be an issue - Porsche air-cooled story?

For a reasonable money to get into a prancing stallion the 430 would be the one at that budget.

Just had a quick look on Autotrader Cheshire and the cheapest 430 seems to come in at 110k...?

Around £70k is bottom-end 430 price. Around £80k-£90k will be a very good one. The Autotrader cars are recent and low mileage examples. I'd also advise against a scuderai for which there will be a huge premium.

The prices of 430's is coming down whilst the prices of good clean 360's is rising. Much like the 996 Turbo versus the 997 prices. There will be a cross-over point.

By the time I'm ready to buy mine, who knows perhaps the 430 may come into my budget.

But service and maintenance costs on ANY Ferrari are considerable and parts are expensive. The older ones require an engine out job for cambelt change. You'll often not be able to source cheap parts from Euro Car Parts and instead have to deal with Maranello Concessionaires who control the market.

ALL Ferari's are extremely mileage and service history sensitive. Even if it has been parked up much of its ownership, the cambelts still have to be changed on the dot - irrespective of use and mileage. Trying to offload a Ferrari with high miles and poor history is almost impossible. So this all goes to drive up ownership and maintenance costs.

Furthermore and finally, the number of cars is very low. So each car for sale is usually known to the indy specialists and the Ferrari owning fraternity. I'd guess trying to offload one privately would be nigh on impossible - so you have to part ex or sell for cash to a dealer when it comes to offloading it. And we all know what that means!

DerbyJim - as Issyman has shown, an example at Stratstone Wilmslow for £85k. Stratstone Wilmslow has everything at premium pricing. At a good indy that car would be around £5k less - but won't have a main dealer warranty. So probably better to pay the extra at a main dealer for the reassurance. (as they say, reassurance comes at a price).

The Autotrader cars are silly money - one has to constantly be surveying the market and seeing where its going.

I can personally attest to Stratstone Ferrari being excellent in terms of customer service as I bought my car there.

If your friend is interested tell him to talk to Stephen Thompson [email protected]. Top bloke.

I don't blame him, by the time you have chucked in the towel and gone the Aston/Jag route, then (assuming your doctor says you are still ok to drive) the only drugs you will be interested in will be sanotogen, diazepam and the like...

The Porsche and Ferrari would be a dream scenario for me. 993C2 and 348, what's that? 60-70 grand? Plus running costs?

I'd look to a 430
