Thanks for the input all
I will head down and check it out
I spoke to the guy yesterday and he seems solid. He said the warrenty would cover any engine issues as he knows the car he is happy with that.
I am thinking of pushing for a week money back guarantee if I head down and buy it as this will give me time to get a PPI done up in leeds (for a major issue)
Forgive me if any of the following sounds patronising and parent / child. Just offering my HO on what I would do in the same situation. Doesn't mean I'm right / you're wrong etc. :dont know:
If you are just heading down to buy (heart over head etc and who can blame you!) let the forum know and you'll get a really good list from us on here on what to look out for!
My approach would be a little different. I'd ask him if he'll let you put a small deposit, say £200, to hold it? Then get the PPi done first? Peter Morgan (other PPi experts are available) can give it the once over pretty quick and know 996's well.
That gives you time to do a background check, call the OPC's and enquire about the history. I've done this and they are typically very helpful once you get through the 'are you buying or not' customer service layers'.
You'll then get the report from Peter (or whoever you use) and if it's thumbs up you typically have a nice 'Mike Brewer' list of stated faults to haggle over. I've saved more than double the cost of the PPi on both my purchased 911's, plus have rejected several that seemed okay to me (and to the vendor in some cases, one so bad he traded it himself rather than sell it privately).
But you might be more than capable of spotting problems than I - not difficult as while my father was a very skilled engineer I got the chromosomes from my mother and she was a florist.......
Secondly, regarding warranties..... as T8 stated, they often have a cash limit and the one (but extremely rare) Achilles heel of a 996.1 is the IMS bearing. Chances are
very much in your favour it'll be fine - we're talking 1 in the 1,000's. But were it to let go you need to be comfortable that even with a warranty, because they often have the upper payout limit, you may need to cover some of that cost. (FYI once you have it other warranties are available - Hartech do great cover once you've bought it and its not too far away from you in Leeds.
That all said, I can't think of another car I long for more than my old C2. And being Lapis Blue I'm obviously biased that it's a great one you are looking at......... So good luck and hope it all works out for you!!
