Thoughts on this 996?

Looks alright to me.

Definitely worth going looking at if it ticks all your boxes. Service history is not the best, but at the same time it's not bad.

The guy has some other decent motors in so looks like he knows his stuff and it's warrantied too.

SH looks OK to me, appreciate it's not full OPC but at least it's been done regularly:

Good history - supplied by Arlington Porsche of Northampton (who appear to be the 1st owner), who also carried out the first 2 services (11907 and 28300). Serviced by Porsche Silverstone at 39527, Porsche Newcastle at 49264 and 60707, Finlay Gorham (specialist) at 66600 and Landspeed in Ipswich at 69774 and most recently at 71522 in May 2014.

Can't see any major scares.

I'd get a PPI, even at that price as it just gives you that extra piece of mind?

FWIW - my 2001 (Y) 90k 996C2 in a less attractive colour sold for £12.5k from the dealer I traded it in back in May, so the price is seasonal and okay IMHO.

Good luck!

Looks like a good value for money car to me.

Check out exactly what the warranty covers (or doesn't cover!) and what the maximum single claim limit is and then drive it as much as possible during that 3 months.

After that .......... keep your fingers crossed and keep on having fun.

Thanks for the input all

I will head down and check it out

I spoke to the guy yesterday and he seems solid. He said the warrenty would cover any engine issues as he knows the car he is happy with that.

I am thinking of pushing for a week money back guarantee if I head down and buy it as this will give me time to get a PPI done up in leeds (for a major issue)

Forgive me if any of the following sounds patronising and parent / child. Just offering my HO on what I would do in the same situation. Doesn't mean I'm right / you're wrong etc. :dont know:

If you are just heading down to buy (heart over head etc and who can blame you!) let the forum know and you'll get a really good list from us on here on what to look out for!

My approach would be a little different. I'd ask him if he'll let you put a small deposit, say £200, to hold it? Then get the PPi done first? Peter Morgan (other PPi experts are available) can give it the once over pretty quick and know 996's well.

That gives you time to do a background check, call the OPC's and enquire about the history. I've done this and they are typically very helpful once you get through the 'are you buying or not' customer service layers'.

You'll then get the report from Peter (or whoever you use) and if it's thumbs up you typically have a nice 'Mike Brewer' list of stated faults to haggle over. I've saved more than double the cost of the PPi on both my purchased 911's, plus have rejected several that seemed okay to me (and to the vendor in some cases, one so bad he traded it himself rather than sell it privately).

But you might be more than capable of spotting problems than I - not difficult as while my father was a very skilled engineer I got the chromosomes from my mother and she was a florist.......

Secondly, regarding warranties..... as T8 stated, they often have a cash limit and the one (but extremely rare) Achilles heel of a 996.1 is the IMS bearing. Chances are very much in your favour it'll be fine - we're talking 1 in the 1,000's. But were it to let go you need to be comfortable that even with a warranty, because they often have the upper payout limit, you may need to cover some of that cost. (FYI once you have it other warranties are available - Hartech do great cover once you've bought it and its not too far away from you in Leeds.

That all said, I can't think of another car I long for more than my old C2. And being Lapis Blue I'm obviously biased that it's a great one you are looking at......... So good luck and hope it all works out for you!! :D

An early 996 is a great car but get a PPI as suggested and make sure they inspect for bore scoring (less likely on a 3.4 but still a possibility). However, the risk of an engine failure on most cars (yet alone one with known issues) is greater than 1 in 1000's as stated above so make sure you put some money aside. :thumb:

Ok I will take the excellent advise on offer and arrange a PPI.

Can anyone recommend one in the Ipswich area

Very nice indeed, best headlamp shape & lovely colour too, but it's just begging to be modified.

I can only recommend Peter Morgan as he did both the cars I bought and gets who I have personal experience of. He will travel His website's grand with all his contact details.

Anyone else know someone more local? :dont know:
