Outdoor cover for the winter?

Now that winter is approaching I'm even less happy at not having a garage... what is any ones experience of using an outdoor car cover?

I'm aware you have to ensure the car is clean before you put it on (or the dust scratches the car). But is it then better to cover or leave it open?

I used this last winter due to some house renovations

https://www.autopyjama.com/auto-storm-uk/aqua/

Worked well, never covered the car when wet always picked a nice dry day gave it a wash, dry/drive and tucked it away. Removed the battery, DME and slightly over inflated the tyres and let it sit from Oct to March. No issues what so ever. I did pick three or four nice days in that period to remove the cover and spin it on the starter and push it around a little as I was concerned over flat spotting the tyres.........probably will have to do the same this winter unless I get my decorating trousers on :frustrated:

Thanks Colin, I'll take a look at that. Anyone seen any other good covers for street parking (outside house under gaze of cctv)?

Personally I would not use one if your paintwork is in decent condition ie no matter how secure you will get scuffing from the wind induced rubbing annywhere the cover is in contact with the paint. It happened to me with an OEM outdoor cover (ie very snug fit) in a covered car port which was only partly exposed to the wind (not the 993  ) and so I vowed I would never use one again.

To me you are better just giving the car a good wax and sealant in preparation for the winter if you have no garage and park away from trees :thumb:

If you do get one make sure you get a decent breathable one or you will get more problems again than without one.

In the end I used to use a neighbours for free  but after 5 years I now have a garage again :thumb:

Thanks Jonttt, I have to say that is the answer I was half expecting! In my case I'll be using the car throughout the winter anyway, so taking on and off might be a hassle as well as detrimental. But I really want it covered - and my trawling of local ads and putting letters under nearby garage doors has yielded no results!

I have had the same thoughts with my Honda. I am currently finishing giving the paintwork a good once over but it will most likely spend the winter outside. I won't cover it for fear of more damage than protection.

I had a very good (read expensive) cover which I used a couple of times when I'd just bought my car. I ended up selling it.

I would not consider one for regular use as:

- Even if the cover is 'breathable", some moisture will get trapped under the cover
- Unless the car is immaculately clean, do not even THINK of putting a tight-fitting cover on it. For fairly regular use, this kills it.

993's tend to feel a bit damp inside in the mornings if left overnight in the winter without a cover. I'm not sure why, maybe the seals/ rubbers/sunroof let in moisture or something. I've used Moltex, reasonable price, very good at keeping moisture out.

After a while I find the inner linings shed white dust over the car - Covercraft were the worst.

Schwarz993 - 2000 posts. Nice one. :thumb:

If you do have to use one, the 'StormShield' is a good choice:

As others have said though - if your paint is perfect, don't use it all the time. It is a really good fit, and you will cringe as you are pulling it over the rear PU!
Fortunately, I have 18 year old paint so don't mind pulling it on while the garage is full - but I only use it when I am away for a week or two, and it won't get used once I get the re-spray next year!

Maybe I should just clear a space in the garage.......

I've considered moving house as I can't stand the though of the 993 standing out in another winter - there's no room to build a garage or even a carport here. Along with the general corrosion issues, I'm always concerned that I'll find water on the floor through a blocked sunroof drain, especially if we have as much rain as last year... So I've just ordered one of these:

It should be here in the next day or so, I hope it's as good as they say.

I've used a Covercraft (Stormforce I think it's called?) for many years on all my cars. They are decent quality but definitely let moisture through, which is very annoying. Also shed a LOT of white fluff which is a major annoyance.

Luckily I haven't had any issues with my paintwork to-date. My car is usually tucked away for 1-3 weeks before I use it again so it's not under covers for a prolonged period. I guess that has helped.

Yesterday was a perfect example of why I've not been able to find a suitable garage for rent/sale locally. Saw one in Gumtree, emailed vendor to ask how wide it was - 2.5m he said. So I went around...with my tape measure...and it was actually 2.1m, which you'd think was fine, but try getting out!
