Thoughts of buying for £12k

Hello all, been lurking a few weeks, looks to be a great forum.

I've promised myself a 996 when I get a promotion at work (hopefully within 6 months if everything goes well) and am just hoping that I'm being realistic in my expectations.

I like the 996.1 and .2 equally in terms of looks, and in my mind, the slightly higher risk of IMS issues on the 3.4 are offset by the slightly higher risk of bore score in the 3.6 (although i don't know if the single bearing IMS in the 3.6 is a concern). I doubt i'll notice the difference in power enough to care, and similarly i don't think i'll prefer the 2wd over the 4wd enough for it to affect which one i want, to me it's more important to find something in good condition and with good history. Mileage too doesn't put me off but i'd prefer something with less than 120k on it.

My only requirements outside of history and possible warranty are manual transmissions, coupe, dark interior (not tan, light grey or red), and 'hard' rather than rouched (is that the word? where it's all bunched up anyway) leather. And not a GT3 / turbo replica, I don't want skirts and rear wings etc, unless they are easy to remove? Bose would be nice but not a deal-breaker.

As much as I like the look of the C4S, purchase price plus higher upkeep would stretch me too far, which also (sadly) means that a turbo is out of reach. I'm aware that I'll need to set aside £2k a year to keep it maintained as I'd want to - tho I'm pretty handy with the spanners if need be for the simpler jobs.

I don't need a particularly raw or thrilling experience as I already have a 230BHP early MX5 so am looking for a GT type cruiser, good for wafting up and down the motorway or a decent A-road blat. It will never see a trackday. Targa is something I know very little about, are they generally seen as good or bad?

Anyway, just wanted to say hi for now, sure I'll be back for questions or advice at some point and looking forward to joining you all properly! :)
Oh, i'm Reading by the way

Apparently (don't hold me to this), the 3.6 engine is worse for IMS bearing failures.

6 months ago I bought my 3.4 C4 manual convertible (see photo below) from a local indie with 88k on it. It's immaculate (although needed a few small jobs which I've mostly done myself: aircon, rad replacement, unblocking drain holes, etc.) and I got it with 12 months tax, 6 months MOT and 6 months warranty for £10,600.

They fit new stainless boxes, new seat heater element and new front drive shaft before I picked it up (costing £1600 - them, not me).

£12k should get you a pretty decent 3.4 996 with some dosh left for rectifying any issues. Personally I'd be looking for one of the last 3.4 cars, only downside is the Boxster front lights & no glove box.

Ps. Insurance fully comp for me and the (6 point speeding) girlfriend was £278.

cheers Alex, yours looks great!
It's difficult to decipher all the various issues on the different engines! you do get a few come up for sale occasionally where these issues have been dealt with that attract a small premium which I'm prepared to pay.

Did you get a PPI which highlighted some of the things they needed to sort before sale?

to be honest, no glovebox is a bigger deal for me than boxster lights!! (i'd just prefer them not to be orange...)

No, I just walked in, asked to take it for a spin, give it a good blast and pressed a few buttons. Noticed the heated seat light wouldn't stay on, the exhaust was blowing and there was a clicking from the front. Salesman said 'don't worry, we'll sort all that'. I looked underneath to make sure no oil leaks and asked him if the car was fine, he said 'yes'.

Went back the day after (after a few emails haggling on the price and confirming work being done before purchase) with £200 deposit.

Rest is history :)

I was the same with the light pack - must be clear. Also no silly skirts or spoilers. Glovebox isn't really an issue due to compartment in door armrests and centre arm rest compartment.

Ps. I had a good read of the history file before committing to make sure oil changes were bob on and no scary horror stories in there. If it's over 50k and under 120k on the clock I wouldn't worry too much about the IMS bearing.

:welcome: to 911uk 'sm' and well done for finding it before buying a car. :thumb:

You seem to have done a lot of research and it's good to see that you'll be going in with your eyes wide open.

If your purchase budget is £12k (ie. you've got more for fettling once you've bought it) you should have plenty of choice. There'll be far more 3.4s within your budget than 3.6s.

If you're set on a manual and know what colours you don't want that'll narrow your search parameters down nicely. Sub 100k miles cars are more common than those with 100k+ but can cost a fair bit more. Similarly you'll need to pay 15-20% more if you buy from a dealer rather than privately.

Have fun researching more whilst you're waiting

ps. 'Ruffled leather' is the Porsche term for the bunched up saggy looking leather seats.

I agree with the posters above: £12k is a good budget for a 996.1 and an ok one for a 996.2.

I always find I don't know exactly which options I'd like until after I've owned the car for a few months, but to me the following would be great:

- Sports exhaust (the standard exhaust has a great note, but is relatively quiet until you really get up the rev range).
- Stereo upgrade (standard is pretty poor and whilst the upgrades are not fantastic, they have more speakers and the speakers are easy to upgrade).
- Litronic headlights, mine has these, so I don't know what the basic ones are like, but the litronics provide the light I'd want.
- 18" wheels, they simply look better.
- cruise control and OBC, I don't often use them, but mine didn't have them and I knew they weren't there so retrofitted them (relatively cheap to do).
- 3 spoke steering wheel, the standard 4 spoke one on the 996.1 looks a bit naff.

A quick note on the interior - if you're looking to retrofit interior upgrades (speakers, steering wheels, etc) then it's massively easier to find them in black than the other colours and they are also much cheaper in black second hand than the other colours.

You sound like me a few months back.

Ended up buying a 2001 996.1 C4 Manual Coupe in Seal Grey with Black Leather. Less than £11k with 74k on the clock. It's not perfect, but it's great fun and usable whilst I slowly improve it. You do need to allow a decent budget for fixing bits and pieces as something will always need doing, but I think it's worth it.

Only painful bit so far for me was the water pump going on a trip to the West Country. Sent car back on a truck and paid a specialist to fix it but the pain of the bill was forgotten pretty much as soon as I was back on the road!

I test drove a few before I made the decision to go buying properly so I had a good idea how they drove before I had the money burning a hole in my pocket!

Enjoy!

I got a belter for eight grand from pct at Coventry. Starship enterprise miles but a huge history file. Painless and cost free for six months and was a great toe dipping car to see if Porsche agreed with me. Traded in for a convertible 996 at the same dealer after six months as my left knee is rubbish and I needed a tiptronic. So far two 996 s have cost less than it has to keep my wife's discovery healthy in the same time period and to be fair that's not a large number either. Mine have been daily drivers and live outside and carry kids and dogs and all the daily life stuff including eight foot long timbers with the roof down. Get one bought and just enjoy it. I've not even hoovered one out yet. Just drive it and smile. A lovely Eastern European chap makes a fabulous job of washing it for a tenner, he really is a great worker.

Hi

Sounds like you know what you're looking at, which is good.

I think you under estimate how nice the 996s are to drive. I've got a 996.2 C2 with M030 suspension and it's great to steer through bends. I had a Vx220 previously and the 996 shares much of the intimacy and feel through the steering, just in a slightly more 'grown up' way. It's much better than a motorway wafter!

You're desires are very similar to mine. I have a plain C2 with no bodykit, black leather in article silver. Options include ruffled leather (which is actually very nice I'm think), sport suspension and Bose.

I'd avoid targas, sunroofs and convertibles. They're all just detracting from the purity. Same applies with Tiptronic gearboxes for me. Sport exhaust would be nice. I wouldn't bother with Litronic as you can just use a HID kit in the normal lights.

You'll be able to get a decent one for £12k if you're looking at a 996.1.

Thanks all - yeah maybe I was a bit harsh saying I wanted a wafter, I'm still expecting a great sports car. I just don't need the ultimate track weapon, I want a fast road car.

I clearly need to do a little more research, litronic lights? Presumably this was an option for the 996.1?
Sports exhaust would be nice but i've read modifying with a silencer bypass is not too difficult.

The stereo upgrade had more speakers? I'd probably look to upgrade the headunit and speakers anyway but good to know what I'd be looking at in each case :thumb:

i'd say 12k was a decent budget and like we all do look at ones 12.5-13k and haggle haggle haggle lol

i paid a little more 13.5k (haggled) for mine but wanted the aero kit etc and wanted a low mileage (56k) and its pretty immaculate so im sure without the aero kit etc you'll have more of a choice ;-)

I highly recomend adding the PSE to your list of must haves, i couldnt live without mine, i posted a video clip of the sound on instagram a couple of weeks back my names L8ydg on there if you want to search and listen to it.

As for the 2k a year to maintain......thats a awful lot i think, i dont spend anywhere near that and im fussy, haha

Best of luck in your search tho.

Buying 12k

I'm in the same boat.

I want a 911 and the rough budget of 12k. I'm in no rush just the right car at the right price. Love the look of the areo kit car but isn't fussy on color spec. just 60-80k mileage car. looking to keep for sometime.

my yearly mileage is 5-6k a year so very little use (works vehicle) but South Yorkshire trips from Liverpool every 8 weeks or so to see family. So would get a bloody good blow out.

I'm no boy racer but the 300 bhp+ is very tempting.

just the IMS bearing, RMS & boar wear.

Service cost isn't that bad. £300+ cheep'ish tax £285 Insurance £640 (quote) for a 30 year old and not bad mpg.

just waiting for the right car poss very early next year better for haggling

I think you guy's should be knocking this chap's door down....

And then looking for a black interior ASAP!

Not fussy :?: That Nephrite Green will test your resolve.

If it's ok to you ..... it looks like you've found the car for you. :thumb:
