Hi Everyone,

Need some advice please on oil as well but not frequency of change.

2006 C4S Cab

My car is on 50000 miles. Used everyday for short trips with the occasional blast.

I want to change the oil, but am so confused. Been looking at Opie Oils for A40 Porsche Approved Oil and there are so many choices.

Questions I need help with:

1) What Viscosity should I go for? 0w/40 or 5w/40?
2) Any particular make you would recommend?
3) Which oil filter should I get?

Thanks in advance

I only use Total Quartz 9000 5w-40 Fully Synthetic(Porsche Approved) in all my cars(change oil every 5/6k miles or bi-annually) and would recommend you consider doing likewise.

Filter(highlighted) although the 60 can be used if no 53 but ask for the 53

Great company in terms of oil supply. :thumb:

Wow what a great price.

Its only for 7 litres though, and i thought I need 9.

In terms of magnetic sump plug, I will definitely get one. I had the IMS guardian fitted on my 996 and think its a good idea

97.1 Carrera/4 (3.6L): Oil change quantity without oll filter approx. 8.0L
997.1 Carrera/4 (3.6L): Oil change quantity with oil filter approx. 8.25L
997.1 Carrera S/4S (3.8L): Oil change quantity without oil filter approx. 8.25L
997.1 Carrera S/4S (3.8L): Oil change quantity with oil filter approx. 8.5L

The seller has a 10 litre package(keep some for top-up). Or just buy another 2/3 litres from him.

The book says 8.25litres(but check your own beforehand). I had a few litres sitting around so only needed 7

0.50 litres can sometimes be slight overfill which can cause a bit of smoke on start-up if the car is at an angle. I'd put 8.25 litres in first then check the level. If should be on the top level. If so go drive it :thumb:

Oil overfill is common on these cars....even slight can cause the smoke on cold start-up(harmless but worrying/brown trouser moments to some)

Thanks for some great advice Wizard.

Really appreciate it

No problem that's why we use 911UK :thumb:

I'm an OEM man. Mobil 1 0W-40.
Hasn't to add every 6-8 months

I have been told that for my driving (or lack of ) 5w -40 would be a good choice.

I used Gulf oil on my 996 previously.

While Mobil oil is good oil a few companies who have been in the Porsche game for a while rate other oil as slightly better for the 996/997 engine.

I suppose if you change oil every 5/6k miles then you can't really go wrong with a quality approved oil but personally speaking, I'd never use 0w in any 911 996/997 that has more than 20k miles on the clock but each to their own.

Do expand wizard. I'd be interested to hear why you wouldn't.

As engines put on the miles oil pressure can drop slightly using 0w oil and oil "weeps" can start to appear around gaskets. With 5w oil you get slightly better pressure to warm-up(inc tick-over) and providing you take care to keep the revs under 3k until warm, then for me the 5w oil is always the best option.

Of more importance is very regular oil changes and for less than £120/£140 a pop every 5/6k miles(or every 6 months) anyone not doing it on older/gen1 996/997/Boxster/Cayman's needs to consider doing so.

A lot of the Porsche Indy's also suggest 5w as these cars age.

Never had one single engine issue using 5w oil and I have had/have 996 GT's, 997 C4S, 993's, and Boxster's.

0w is not an "OMG why are you using that" oil as people use it happily and it will do a good job.....just not in any of my cars.
