996 turbo oil level reading problems

Hi all,

My 'new to me' 2002 996 turbo has a problem with its oil level reading. I sometimes get the yellow warning come up stating something like 'oil
Level low' and a picture of an oil can. I have an old receipt from a specialist stating the instrument cluster is faulty. Is this likely or could it be the oil level sensor that is the culprit? Either way, I need to get it sorted as I can't tell the oil level. The electronic reading is either reading one bar flashing at below the min level or all of the bars full and not flashing.

Can't help but think this is a poor design to have only the electronic check. Someone at at Porsche is a right dipstick (see what I did there?).

Any advice or help appreciated!

Matt

Have you any receipts to say how much oil was put inthe car when it was last serviced?

Get it fix. Before I would drain the oil first and see how much there is , and put the right amount afterward.

Reading the oil

Hi mat

The problem you are having sounds very much like mine

My problem was with the cluster set I did have the oil level sensor changed but this did not fix the problem

Porsche did further investigation and told me that it was the cluster set and the cost was over £2000

I managed to get a second hand set on ebay for under £300 and Porsche did fit them for me (thank you OPC)

They charged me around £150 to diagnose and fit my clusters so £450 fitted as opposed to over £2000

I still have to get my milage adjusted as my old clusters had 67k and the new 96k but OPC did document the change and did my mot with my original clusters fitted so stamped 67k

If you want to speak further please feel free to msg me

Gary

Thanks guys.

Gary, did you just buy a new set of clusters from a similar age turbo and get them swapped over? There are loads of these dodgy 'mileage adjustment places about so changing the mileage shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks,

Matt

The clusters were used from an ebay seller I will find the sellers details and send you a pm may not be till this evening as I am working all day
