Hi all
I've just joined the thread because I'm at the stage of planning the purchase of a 997 C2 or C2S gen 1 later in the year.

I've had a drive in a C2S with pdk at one of the indie specialists and would have been happy to take it home - had I had the money. I'm probably looking at a pre-pdk model. Next step is a drive in a manual version.

I've seen the horror stories about bore scoring and shafts etc. - in fact the dealer was very open and honest about them

Any other tips or advice for a newbie buyer at this stage? All comments gratefully received

Depends on budget? Presumably you mean 997C2 gen 2 at the beginning?
If so I'd say 100% go for it, if you can find the right specced car they can be a bargain, and it's a 911 Porsche at the end of the day, so a vanilla one is also fine without bells and whistles.
IMHO if it's a choice between 997 C2 gen 2 or 997C2S gen 1, it's a no brainer, others will have their own opinions but for sleep free nights, crazy fuel economy, low tax band, Insurance and servicing the base 997 gen 2 wins hands down, plus PDK v Tip I know which I'd choose....

All great cars drive a few first with head not heart! Will a gen 1 develop bore scoring? Probably probably not, as long as you have recognised the possibility and planned budgeted for such an occurrence all is well, if you go in at the high end of gen1 C2 S money and get problems you could be in trouble with an expensive fix on an expensive car

I decided early on cheap Gen1 or expensive gen2 and stuck to that when buying...

Keep saving your pennies and go for a Gen 2 (PDK if possible).

I had an early Gen 1 and it was a great 3 years of ownership but I was always concerned something hellish was going to happen mechanically.

The Gen 2 really is a leap ahead with the PDK and no known (major) mechanical issues as yet.

Good luck and wait for the end of the year for prices to be more favourable for you.

I bought a gen 1 C2s Tip about 12 months ago and love it.

Having said that, if I had the budget, I would have gone for a PDK - even without S.

Right now, my plan prob is to get to a PDK in couple of years.....

Also, I don't see many C2S tips around at the moment - certainly at OPC.

I drove a C2S 997.1 manual and a C2 997.2 PDK. I bought the C2 997.2 PDK. Guess that says where I am on the debate! Just make sure it's red.

This question almost never gets answered. Oh, wait . . . :D

There are a number of threads with the same or similar question, such as this one.

First of all you need to decide on proposed usage. Daily driver or weekend toy being a garage queen in the winter. Then you need to decide your budget and how you intend to spend it, cash or finance or both.

For a more modest budget a 997.1 would be ideal as long as it has had a PPI and/or an OPC inspection. This is an excellent example. The greater your budget the younger the vehicle and the higher the specification. A budget of between £35K and £40K will put you in an average mile 997.2 with very high specification. A budget of greater than £40K will put you in a 997.1 Turbo.

Personally I'd recommend driving as many as you possibly can, carrying out lots of research in specification and the 997 series cars available. Don't spend all your budget and don't buy on mileage but on mechanical condition and supporting invoices.

If you can save / borrow the extra at a sensible interest rate ( see site sponsor Jamie Garside at Performance Car Finance) a gen 2 Carrera S PDK is the car to go for
No engine issues that you may be unlucky with on a Gen 1 car
The PDK is a awesome gearbox and the future, more economical than a manual, quicker than a manual, and changes gear quicker than a manual

Nothing wrong with the 3.6 but for resale and ease of sale it's unloved and unwanted compared to the 3.8 S version.

At the moment I have 4 which if you look at the Porsche GB used car locator on Tuesday when I last looked was the same as the whole OPC network and my cars were all lower mileage bar 1!!!

Thanks for the very helpful advice guys

I'm moving strongly in the direction of saving a bit more to go for the gen 2 pdk. I tend to hold on to cars that I love - I previously owned my BMW 528 for more than 10 years. But my thinking is that if I want to sell ore trade a 911 in 5 years it's going to be a stronger proposition if it's a gen 2 (lower risk and improved technology).

Remaining question is whether I go for a C2 or C2S - and of course, the colour :)

Mike, welcome to 911uk.

To answer your question - C2 or C2S and colour.
There are shed loads of threads on the forum, (use the search function) some giving advice and others telling you what the best colour is for resale etc and how a C2 is better than C2S and vice versa. Have a read of some of them (might take you a while) and let us know who's advice you will be taking. :thumb:

I've driven lots of different 911s and Cay/Boxsters, I own a 997 Carrera and am still glad it isn't a S. It's a great car and if my option was Gen2 Carrera vs Gen1 Carrera S. I would take the Gen2 car, but take a pinch of salt with all the rhetoric about the Gen2 engines. New ones are always better than the old ones, until proven otherwise, and it's too early to say.

FUD marketing at its best.

There is an interesting article about the S badge on a Turbo, called "The Turbo Shitty" and to me it talks of the cynical side of Porsche marketing and the S variants. The Carrera S certainly isn't any quicker on the road in real terms.

If you're keeping the car a while and want to minimise depreciation I'd take Mark Pearce's advice and go for the 'S'. There's a lot of other extras as standard other than the bigger engine.

Re colour, that's too personal to take advice from others on. Grey, black and silver will always be popular with the masses. Blues and other, brighter, colours have plenty of fans but it doesn't mean to say they'd all actually buy one in that colour.

Don't get me wrong, I think Turbo or Turbo S would be my ideal car esp if I had the £ to use it everyday. I'd be equally happy with a C2S 997.1 or 2. I bought a C2 because it had close to the spec I wanted and easier to afford, and I have no regrets.
That article I mentioned doesn't think any car is sh*** either, it's just an unfortunate title.
