Making my own singer porsche 911 door cards .

My door cards have had it and need replacing, the first thought i had was to make some RS ones but being a fan of the Singer 911 i thought i would have a go at making some of them.
My intention from the beginning was to make them as identical as possible and not to hurry , the biggest stumbling block was figuring out what i could use to get the shape of the door pulls , they are not half egg shaped or any where near half moon shaped , anyway as you will see below Tesco saved the day.
Over about three months i gathered the bits and pieces required and have recently put them together , there is a lot of photos to come as i thought it best to show what ive done in that way just in case anyone else fancies a go , the first photo shows a actual singer door card , mine will be black.
Sorry about the way the captions are on the photos , i just cant figure out how to do it properly .

So as you can see i stumbled on the idea of using a cycle helmet , the shape is very very close but not perfect , i think you would have to sculpt one to get it spot on , anyway here's a few more photos , more to come tomorrow .

Hi

That is ingenious! Who's a clever boy!

Actualy my door cards are water damaged, so I bought some secondhand ones in good condition. I will use acrylic varnish on the backs to protect them, and also replace the door membranes.

It will be interesting to see how yours turn out......

All the best

Berni

I wondered how you were getting on with this Keith :?:

Lots like youre making good progress! Fingers crossed for the rest of the build :)

Are you coming to the North East PCGB show in August?

Picture 4 is now my screen saver BTW  :D

Chris

Well Keith, that is about as 'left field' as it gets :thumb:
What are you're thoughts on actually attaching 'Yer Helmet' to the door??
I know that there is some force needed to close the door with the leverage point where it is....... :?:

I will look forward to seeing progress, especially with the fabric for the main body. Keep us posted :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I've had a sneek preview of these! I think you guys might be surprised :worship:

Keep up the good work keithster

Ian

looking forward to this as well , however I am now concerned for your safety when out cycling without a helmet and suggest we have a whip round for a replacement.

Thanks a lot chaps , ill get some more shots up later on :thumb:

Very 'Blue Peter' Keith! It does take an artistic mind to come up with ideas like that.

Looking forward to seeing the finished articles.

Blue Peter indeed Tom, my fingers are still stuck together , they are light and very strong , as far as fitting them goes i could not think of a way to use one eyelet ( as singer do) they must have a hinge or clasp type of fitting and are secured with one final bolt "maybe" ? ..
Mine will fix to the original and existing allen key hole then a screw in to the metal of the door and a third more hidden screw through the little tear drop hole that already exists in the helmet ( bottom end ) , this screw is attached through the door card in to a metal plate on the back of the door card itself , it will be easy to take them on and off.

Wow, full marks for ingenuity. Looking forward to the finished article.

Cheers Maxie ... The next lot of photos ends with a shot of the leather , the actual leather that Singer use is from a company in New York , thanks to Paul's info at the show i was able to contact them and they sent me a beautiful sample of actual basket weave , interwoven separate strands of leather which was going to cost about £800 , my other option was to buy embossed basket weave leather, basically the weave is pressed into the leather , i sent for a sample from a company ( Elmo) in Sweden and it was spot on , exactly half the price as well.

Keith, your not building a glider in the bell tower as well are you :?:

It's so totally left field, but ingenious. Bl@@dy well done. I am really looking forward to the finished pictures of this :thumb:

Maybe a little sideline for you when you need a break from painting :bye:

Keith I trust you are going to Patent the design. You may find these popping up a shows in the future.

Really looking forward to seeing these in the flesh.

What are your plans for the speakers?
