i just moved to north cornwall (bodmin area) with my beloved 911 SC targa (see pic) and just wondered if anyone could recommend a specialist garage / engineer who would be able to help me look after my car in this area?

Welcome to 911uk.

Pirelli Pete lives down your way, in fact not too far at all.
You could drop him a PM if he's not watching this thread. Although he drives a 996 Turbo he may well know of a good independent that would care for an older air cooled model.

Good luck :thumb:

Martin Reed in Barnstaple specialises in air-cooleds and used to look after my 993 for its previous owner. There's also Williams Crawford in Saltash who are extremely good with the older Porsches.

No hesitation in recommending Williams Crawford - no pressure - no nonsense - very helpful - and genuine enthusiasts - I would travel but luckily they're close to me

Don't touch the guy in truro who calls himself a Porsche servicing expert
I can't mention his name or he'll be round to thump me ( and i'm not kidding)

but no one in cornwall itself apart from Williams Crawford
There is Chris Lee in redruth who is main dealer trained from the 90's but tends to only do the occasional part time work as he works for his brothers transport co
But a few in devon. all with good reputations
Oak Tree Garage Newton Poppleford ( Crispin Manners)
Martin Reed in Barnstaple
SCS in Honiton ( Andy Moss)
Braunton Engineering in Braunton

Hi Zagoba,

I don't live very far from you and finalising a deal on a 78 sc with Williams Crawford tomorrow.

I thoroughly recommend them they are true enthusiasts and Adrian really knows his 911's!

Hi Zagoba,

Yup, I'm down in 'Druth so not far.

I've used Braunton Engineering previously so I can comment positively on them, they know and love the marque and usually have a few in for restoration, but of a ***** to get there though it turns into an all day epic driving up and train back, then same again to collect the car.

Mark Pearce is the fount of all Porsche knowledge down here and has passed on some solid info, I will also agree that you need to stick clear of the guy in Truro based on experience with him.

I may be accused of playing the same old record but having tried a few indies I still use OPC Exeter !!! very nice people, I've called them on the phone when I've had lights flashing that mean nothing to me and also just turned up if passing with a minor niggle and had it fixed there and then, (without charge, yes it's true, an OPC who helps) !!

They give a substantial discount on labour rate for 996 and older models and a minimum of 10% on parts all the time so you get OPC for Indie rates.

They have a collection and delivery service and having travelled with several of the delivery drivers, they also do quite a few SC and older cars there at Exeter, some of which only have mileage to and fro Exeter in between annual services.

Krystal is the Service C0-ordinator and Wayne the Chief Tech, both helpful and knowledgeable.

Good luck, welcome to Cornwall and later in the year we could try a 'meet' at Route 38 cafe perhaps, and get some of the cars from England to venture over the Tamar !!

Hi, I'm a newbie to the forum having signed up today. A Cornish boy originally from Illogan now living in Bodmin area after 25-odd years up in and around London. I have owned a 911 SC for the last 20 years and still cherish it to this day. The engine was rebuilt by Mike Remnant, the chief of engineering at the Cornwall college, and I have the car regularly looked after by Nigel Allen, who is based near St Columb. For anyone in the Duchy looking for a reliable and extremely knowledgeable Porsche mechanic Nigel is highly recommended.
Google Nigel Allen VW Audi Porsche and you will find his website.
Happy motoring in 2015,
Simmo911

Hi there and welcome.

I would not hesitate to go to Williams Crawford in Saltash or And Moss (SCS) in Honiton

Also as Pirelli Pete say's the OPC in Exeter is also very good

Nigel

Funny thing, I have sent two emails etc, to WC and ask about work on my 930.

No reply not a good start. So will be going to another place.

I've had the same issues with the guy in Newton Poppleford, and when I've called to follow up several emails one of his mechanics generally tells me how busy they are.........

The problem with me for most independents, is that they are all the other side of Exeter and it makes no sense for me to drive past Exeter OPC to get to them when I've been served so well by OPC.

I have sent a email, to Nigel Allen as per in this topic.

Lets see what happens there?
