has anyone got any experience with obtaining and using a Piwis 2 at home at all?

Whilst I'm no mechanic, I'm into my IT and love the idea of using this for all of the features you can code/ turn on/off and also the diagnostics checks etc..

I'm fully aware of the Durametric cable & software and have tested the Pro version but wondered what extra's you can get from the Piwis 2 kit since I've got the software but no VCI/bosch device as yet.

PIWIS is the better diagnostic tool for these cars.

Dodgy PIWIS is around £3000-£4000 from searching. I've no idea what the real unit costs

The cheapest way to Piwis?

You can re-flash a certain model Bosch KTS (520?) with the porsche firmware rather than buy a proper Piwis. However I believe you also need a porsche specific cable (and obviously a laptop with the software).

You could risk this for £750:

Or one of these looks more convincing:

I do not know of anyone who has made a purchase or tried any of these.

Please also note that for certain security related functions (add new keys and immobiliser coding etc) you'll need an access code for your car from Porsche, which they won't give you....(but they do give to trusted indies).

There is a replacement of piwis

There is a new piwis on the aftermarket--PIWIS VCX-PLUS. Function the same when doing Porsche, but it comes with additional JLR software which can program JLR vehicle models.

I was under the impression that you can't actually buy it as such - I thought that they were effectively leased under a subscription model? Pretty sure that a 5 figure sum has been mentioned in connection with these before as well (but that was in the mists of time and may have been dollars)...

Never going to be cost effective for a hobbyist to own though.

Porsche Durametric is more than enough - if anybody is close to Birmingham you can visit Richard at RSR Autotech.

He will show you how it works! Its a good tool! :)

Clones are replicas that are frowned upon by the industry. Also if you have problems reprogramming or adjusting ecu/module settings there is NO support or backup.

Some clone tools are cool, some are bad and will damage ecu's beyond repair. There are clone remapping/tuning tools that work really well, but I stick to genuine these days. Real tools get updates and bug fixes are quickly solved by the manufacturer.

I have seen a good clone PIWIS in use and wouldn't have known it was a copy, but they are very expensive even for clone. Probably the same manufacturer selling on the side - like the Chinese selling Paul Smith t shirts on eBay. Real ones say Made in China so they're obviously printing extras to flog on.

The guy that coded the cruise on my 997 this week had both Durametric and a cobbled together PIWIS based on the Bosch unit... I seem to remember him suggesting he paid c. £2.5k for his PIWIS setup.

The Durametric was quick and looked pretty straightforward to use, but he ended up having to use PIWS to successfully code my car. Of course it could have been operator error, but either way I left with enabled cruise and no other coding issues so I'm a happy boy :)

Just one other thought, don't Autologic have a solution for our cars? I'm sure my DME values were read at the specialists on one of these...

OP - it comes down to what you want to achieve and how often.

As I've posted before, if it's just to check fault codes and clear the service light then a £20 cable will suffice, if you want to alter features or add components then a Durametric Pro is necessary but bear in mind it will cost more than three or four trips to your local OPC.

piwis cable and piwis pro

$20 piwis cable can do these:
clear fault codes, reset airbags lights, door remote control etc

waht about $2K piwis pro?
