Porsche is selling a four-cylinder car in the UK for the first time in almost 20 years.

The launch of the 2.0-litre turbo Macan SUV breaks the firm's tradition for offering cars powered by six- or eight-cylinder engines, and will further test the faith of its die-hard fans who've had to watch the German firm successfully launch first one then another SUV alongside its traditional sports cars.

The base-model Macan uses a version of the petrol engine powering the current VW Golf GTI and makes 234bhp to propel the SUV to 62mph from rest in 6.9 seconds, according to Porsche. By contrast the 3.0-litre V6 in the Macan S takes 5.4 seconds.

The arrival of the new entry model means the Macan range now starts at £40,276, compared with £43,300 for the V6. The cheapest Porsche remains the Boxster at £38,237.

The entry Macan is available as a special order only, according to Porsche. 'We don't see a big volume for this car, but it's sensible entry level model to have," a spokesman for the brand said.

The last time Porsche sold a four-cylinder car in the UK was 1995 when it discontinued the 968 2+2 sports car. That ended a run of front-engined, four-cylinder models sold alongside the six-cylinder rear-engined 911 that started with the budget 924 model nearly 20 years earlier.

The four-cylinder Macan shaves a hefty 95kg from the weight of the six-cylinder model, taking the figure to 1,770kg. Consumption and CO2 emissions are also improved to 39mpg and 168g/km for the twin-clutch PDK-only model, compared to 32mpg and 204g/km for the petrol V6.

Buyers preferring the lower-emission car have the Chinese market to thank. The four-cylinder model made its debut at the recent Beijing motor show and is likely to be a big-seller in the country thanks to reduced consumption tax of 12 percent compared to 25 percent for the V6. Other Chinese-offered luxury cars hiding four-cylinder engines include the Jaguar XJ limo, which is also available with a 2.0-litre turbo unit.
