Hi,

On my way to work this morning all was well, listening to the radio and coasting to a set of lights and suddenly, without warning, the engine stops. No warning lights, no stuttering just off.

The engine turned over but wouldnt start so I had it towed back to my local indy who initially thought it was the fuel pump or relay.

Hes plugged his PIWIS and durametrics in and the fuel pump and relays are fine. The only fault code in the DME is P1671 'purge fan' or 'short circuit to ground/B+'

Anyone got any idea what this means? My indy thinks the ECU is likely to be f*&cked.

Any advice?

How much is a new ECU? Can I get one from a breakers? Could it be anything else?

I presume the immobiliser would have a different fault code?

If you log into porsches own technical website (its paid and for registered technicians only I think) there is a flow chart to follow of things to do with this fault code. He has followed this procedure and got to the 'check the relay' bit. This is ongoing at the moment. After this it is 'replace ecu' so I'm not holding out much hope!

Had an ECU pop on my girlfriends old Ford KA years ago. We used a local ECU repair place - basically unbolted the ECU from the KA (about the size of the Bose amp in the 996T trunk) and dropped it off with the ECU repair place. Think it cost about £200 and was ready the next day. Plugged it back in, and the car started and drove perfectly. We had no further ECU issues. Work was warrantied for a year iirc.

Hopefully it's a similar situation for your 996T mate (if it is the ECU of course)

Dunno if there are any ECU specialists in your local area? I tried to find the one we used years ago (Derbyshire based) but they seem to have closed or are no longer paying Yell for a listing.

Worst case - give a few ECU repair places a call and get an idea of costs. Then call Porsche and ask for a new ECU (just for a laugh).

Fingers crossed that your Indy finds that it's not the ECU and can fix it today for you mate.

Hello mate I work in the motor trade and we use these guys for ecu testing, must be worth getting a quote from them?http://www.ecutesting.com/

New ecu is £1500 + programming roughly.

I've used them too, although it wasn't the ECU at fault on that occasion. I think they're who 911_Newbie is referring to as well.

Yep - that's the firm! Based near where i used to live. Seem to recall it was a small outfit but they did a good job testing the ECU and confirming the fault+ fixing

This company are local to me and are world renowned, I've used them for the :thewife: Seat Ibiza ABS pump fault that the dealer diagnosed at £600 for a replacement, they tested it for £40 found no problem and told me it was probably the fuse on top of the battery box, it was and cost 25p.

They have ECU's sent to them from all over the world.

But my personal opinion is that it's not the ECU itself thats at fault but maybe a dry connection at the plug. I had a similar thing that was throwing up a crank sensor fault even after fitting a new sensor until I traced the cable to the ECU and after I re-connected the ECU plug again an it worked fine.

Silly question (more for my benefit really) where is the ECU on the 996T? Is it easily disconnected/removed?

Under the rear shelf/sub

Thanks for all the helpful replies chaps!

The indy has been all over the car like a rash with a voltmeter! He's isolated the problem to one of the wires which is in the lead which connects to the ECU. He's been at the ECU with the voltmeter and it is apparently fine and displaying correct voltages at each pin - whatever that means.

I'm ok at turning nuts but when someone mentions electrics and relays I'm completely lost.

Anyway, the good news is that the panic is over, the ECU is fine (it lives behind the rear seats on an aluminium housing btw). He reckons the best thing to do is to get a new relay/wires from a breaker and he will put it on. Hopefully having one delivered tomorrow or Thursday and be back on the road by the end of the week!

You beauty!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Once again, thanks chaps

Just a thought on the opposite side to the ecu are a load of relays, they sit upside down and are apparently prone to falling out of their holders! Has he checked these?
