Hi all,

was parking up in the garage.

When i put the car in reverse and slowly reverse, i get a sort of screeching noise which goes up and down. Thought weird. Put it into 1st and it did the same, only does it at very slow crawling speed.

in idle it doesnt make the noise, went for a short drive up the road, and no noise.

Very confused.

Screech

Belt slipping?
Without hearing the noise it's hard to say.
However, typically, when strain on the engine is introduced, the belt would slip. Starting off in 1st or reverse introduces enough strain to do this.
The 996 does have a tensioner which is supposed to keep the belt at the correct tension unlike an ordinary car which relies on the manual adjustment of the alternator.

Hey,

that's sounds like it. Car just had a major service.

the belt was replaced in June last year (original one done by a Porsche indy).

Will give the garage a call on Monday.

Hi all,

okay checked the belt and it doesnt seem to be the belt.

sounds like it is coming from where the pentosin topup is in the back.

is there a pump or something here, that might be on its way out?

Water pump ?

Water pump ?

Will the water pump make this sort of noise only at low speed?

at idle or normal driving, say above 10mph there is no noise at all.

also if it is the water pump is this a engine out job?

sounds like the hydraulic pump for the clutch. Is there fluid in it?

Hi,

checked the pentosin tank and it has fluid in there.

The hydraulic pump, is that the metal thingy next to the pentosin filler cap.

as that's where the noise is coming from.

Regards,

Raj

Yep that's it. I had a hydraulic line split and the pump made a hell of a noise. I would get it properly checked out if I were you.
