Change of 993 Tiptronic original steering wheel - Help!

Hi there.

First post-ever, as I've just bought a 993 Targa Tiptronic (1997) and loving it! Works needed on it but that's part of the fun.

I do want to get rid of that ugly steering wheel for something nicer and also because I'm quite tall and would like something smaller to have more space for my legs...

Questions are:
- Is there a risk of generating malfunction if I change the existing Tiptronic steering wheel for a different one (as mentioned to me by a specialist...)
- which models can I go for that will have Tiptronic + airbag in 3 spoke
- where can I find sizes of different models as I do need something smaller than what I have today for legs space.

Thank you for your valuable help.

ps: this won't be my last post... :)

Hi and welcome.

Personally I like the raid steering wheel which are TUV approved, retain the airbag and crucially are smaller than the OEM wheel.

They do a version with flappy pedals for tips.

I would recommend 365mm which is close to the 993 RS wheel ( the RS wheel is none airbag)

Gert at carnewal is the cheapest I could find and he sells the porsch hub converters for them. Worth checking with him which ones are 993 tip compatible ps I presume you have a tip S with the buttons on the OEM wheel ?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Can't advise you on the new wheel but I will say that if you do the replacement yourself be sure NOT to turn on the ignition with the airbag disconnected. If you do, it will register a permanent error on the DME which you will then have to get reset.
Not fatal, but a bit of a pain.
Have fun with the new car.

I couldn't find a 365mm with paddles, but there is a 340mm wheel - I'm just not sure if this would be too small?

Thank you for your answers, appreciate it.

Yes, it's the Tip S with buttons ont he steering wheel. I don't even know what is the diameter of the OEM I have...
I'm not looking for paddles though, just the basic buttons on the steering wheel, which I think can be found on a three spoke for 996s which is compatible on 993? But maybe diameter is the same...

996 SWs are interchangeable.

PS - nice car :thumb:

PPS - :welcome:

There is no risk of malfunction (the 993 is a simple beast, with little diagnostics to complain via, and the Tip switches are just that - you could use a couple of door-bell presses if you so chose and it wouldn't care).

The only thing to be aware of is as mentioned, watch for the airbag:

1) disconnect the battery for AT LEAST 30 mins to allow the airbag firing circuits to dissipate (to prevent accidental detonation) prior to removal of the (old) steering wheel.

2) only re-connect the battery after re-fitting (new) steering wheel - so as to also not risk accidental detonation and also not to latch a DME fault code (resettable).

Thank you GT4!

I will make sure to watch for the airbag.

Now need to figutre out the different diameters!

I run a 340mm wheel in my other toy and it would work but as the 993 has heavier steering I was worried it may be too small ie make the steering too heavy. I therefore went for the 365mm which I'm really pleased with.

I had a reply from Gert regarding this:

"With the proper hub, you can install any Raid steering wheel with paddles into a 993 Tip.
One paddle is up, the other is down shifting.
Only the Rascasse and Cavallo steering wheels at 340 mm can be supplied with paddles. No 365 mm steering wheels are available with paddles."

So if you do want paddles - it will have to be 340 mm

If its any use here are some pics of my 340mm raid wheel in my Z3m. It suits that car perfectly but the smaller diameter does make the steering a lot more direct / weighty....

Was that last pic from the rehearsals of your Clown car finalé?

Thank you for your answers.
So basically, it's paddles or nothing.
And no 996 three spoke adaptable on 993?

(that includes 986 Boxster too, as they are 996 part numbers)
