ok *think* I've found a 996. possibly :D

Due to it being a private car, I would be foolish not to get a PPI.

So, I've contacted the local OPC (guildford) and they'll do me the 111-point check (they class as PPI) for £217 inc VAT.

I've also contacted the place that did the last load of servicing (they've told me it's a straight car as well, which was nice) - they'll do a PPI for £150 + vat.

Is the Porsche PPI a better option?

Thoughts for the noob :D

Dan

Make sure that compression test and boroscope inspection of the cylinder walls is included..A must for looking at engine condition..

After that is a visual inspection and road test mainly..

The garage that's done all the work of late, they're hardly going to say anything about the car. A fresh face might well be a better bet :?:

OK, so ignore OPC. Where to get a PPI nr Guildford?

A very good point and I can't believe I didn't think of that :bonk:

So, for "local" PPI nr Guilford, you're pretty much looking at Nine Excellence?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, as I don't know the area at all.

Dan :D

996 PPI

I don't know the age of the car but obviously it must be older than 2005What I'm going to say might sound contentious but in my humble experience (and I've just bought my first Porsche - 996 Turbo) I don't see too many of these age vehicles in OPC's. So I like to think that it is a wiser choice to take it to an independent who is seeing this age of vehicle and is very familar to the raft of problems typically encountered with the model - you know, the mechanical issues of which there are plenty of threads on the forum. I cannot recommend anyone in particular "down south" but I have spoken to Nine Excellence and 911 Virgin and they both seemed very clued up on all things Porsche. My tip? Opt for an independent rather than an OPC - and I am sure there will be a raft of counter comments telling me how wrong I am - but this is my personal opinion and what I would do if I were in your shoes. There is no right or wrong - just preferences and hunches I guess. But take a look at an OPC or a few OPC's and see the type of vehicles they have on their ramps and count how many are 996s versus 997 and 991's.

Also agree on independent IMHO.
Try Peter Morgan too not sure how much he charges but well respected.

Well, I'm going to buck the trend and say go with a Porsche OPC 111 point check.

Whoever does the PPI will charge about the same, or probably a bit more than the 111 point check, and they will give you a nicely typed report report, and somewhere on the front page, in small letters, it will state that they will not be held responsible for anything they either didn't find, or did find and didn't include in the report,

So in effect you have circa £250' worth of valueless paper. and not many PPI'er's I know have the facility to put the car up on a ramp and inspect underneath bits.

An OPC can check the service history, if it's been Porsche maintained on their computers, they can check for outstanding recalls and work etc, and will put the car up on a ramp and include stuff in their check that can't be seen with the car on the ground.

So, FWIW, a OPC 111 point check and a visit to an MOT test station for an MOT, which will include emissions tests etc, giving some, albeit not very accurate indication of internal firing and compression etc, is a much better route than any PPI inspection who can walk away from their inspections with absolutely no resp[onsibility at all.

Just my opinion of course, other opinions are available, and widely expressed.

And will the OPC stand responsible for anything that goes wrong after there inspection ?

Personally, I think any inspection that doesn't involve putting the car up onto a ramp and being able to stand under it has severe limitations. One option is to ask the seller to take it to nominated independent specialist within a reasonable distance. Where a PPI involves travelling out to a vehicle, that means invariably jacking the car up and placing it on axle stands - better than nothing but probably not as reliable as standing under it ina workshop ramp with full lighting and tooling facility.

Of course any inspection is no guarantee - but it sure helps to spot things an untrained eye is not aware of and in turn being able to leverage these into the negotiations. I had my purcahse driven by the dealer into a local specialist and was able to walk under the car after the inspection to be highlighted all the points it revealed - extremely useful.

OK, good day today ;)

Need a PPI in the Guildford area.

Suggestions/recommendations?

Will need to call them tomorrow

Dan

Yes, good news and good luck.

thanks :)

Following on from a post up on Pistonheads, due to the amount of history with the car, a PPI seems a bit OTT for what I may need.

One recommendation is to get in touch with a local specialist, and ask them to do an hour's-worth of engine inspection......

Just to put my mind at rest...

Thoughts?

Good news Dan :thumb:

I'm not sure that an hour would be enough if you're having a borescope done :dont know:
