PostPosted: Tue May 01, 2012 11:55 pm    Post subject: Inspection before buying 996TT S , how to do it ?? Reply with quote

Hi guys,

Did put a deposit on a 996 Turbo S and before buying it I want to have it inspected as I am not very familiar with them. What is the best way to do it ? Shall I use the service of a independant porsche specialist or shall I ask the dealer to send the car to the nearest Porsche garage and get a full report on the general condition of the car ?
Thanks for your help.

Neither way (OPC or indie) is a guarantee.. so I'd suggest making your own decision.

I don't want to sound negative or even put you off but I looked at several cars, had a very well known indie check one and he was very thorough but under estimated an issue which ended up being a deal breaker. The car I bought I sent to a well known OPC (shall we say THE OPC) and they missed a whole heap of stuff (clutch worn, leaking rads etc) that luckily I noticed very soon and the dealer I bought it from put it all right.

Go for which ever you feel most comfortable with. The indie was very expensive, the OPC .. mmm?!?!.. I am not convinced they were bothered or the garage sending it in for inspection didn't have a quiet word to get it through pronto.

One thing I would say is - if the garage are not keen on letting you get it inspected walk away.

Have you got any pics of the Turbo S in question? Also beware that a few Turbo owners modified their cars by sticking an 'S' badge on after 'turbo' to make it go faster and fool everyone else.

Didn't all Turbo S come with carbon brakes, or am I thinking of something else? Might be an easier way of telling whether it's an S or not as I wouldn't imagine many regular turbo owners would want to splash out the expense of the brake upgrade to make it look like an S.

Spot on....Turbo S came with the PCCB option as standard, identifyable with the yellow calipers.

Turbo S was available from August 2004.

Turbo S has standard Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB), which are sports punched and internally ventilated ceramic brake discs with a diameter of 350 millimetres at the front and back (911 Turbo: 330 millimetre steel brake discs with a diameter of 350 millimetres front and back) and six-piston monobloc fixed callipers at the front (911 Turbo: four-piston).

In addition to the Turbo S logo on the boot lid and on door mouldings and centre console, and can be identified by its 18-inch wheels in "GT silver metallic". The hubcaps sport a coloured Porsche crest.

The extended standard features include cruise control, a six CD changer system and the green tinted band at the top of the windscreen.

When looking at the dashboard, the dials are aluminium-coloured but also the "Turbo S" logo on the rev counter.

If you can get the VIN (visible through the windscreen into the car) and find out which OPC supplied it, give them a ring or visit them. Some will give you some info. They might quote Data Protection but tell them you're not interested in previous owners just whether its a legit Turbo S and what spec it should be.

I bought mine without a pre inspection from a reputable indie with a 12 month warranty that paid out without any aggro, when the rear spoiler failed.

Good luck.
