Need a bit of help on this one please guys.

Hopefully looking at a carrera 4 on monday and not viewed one before. I have psm on my boxster S but as its a 4 wheel drive 996 is it less important to have psm?

At this stage I am not sure if it has psm but will find put on Mon when I see it as its very local to me.

Secondly can you get the factory options from the reg or does it need to be the chassis number as I only have the reg?

I can pm it to someone if they can decipher it if possible.

Thanks in advance. Thumb

Good choice with the Carrera 4 Very Happy

AFAIK, PSM was standard on all Carrera 4. Must admit I only ever seen the light flash when we had the snow a while back, otherwise haven't noticed it...

I am not the expert, but think you are correct in PSM being standard on the C4 models. In terms of 4WD being a significantly more sure footed drive... This is probably a religious debate with strong support on both sides. Because most of the drive it to the rear, the PSM system does the bulk of the work moving the torque forward when needed, its probably best considered an electronic device the effects the same result as a diff lock.

From my personal experience, I had a C2 Cab for a whole 6 weeks and turned it around 3 times in the wet. I had a boxster for 6 years and never turned it around due to loss of lateral traction. I now have the car I really wanted and whilst its only month 3 - its not going around on me, including entering a roundabout on Friday morning in heavy rainfall after two weeks of fine (lots of oil on road) at probably twice the speed I should have and having a couple of seconds of power slide... Very nice way to start the last day of the working week.

Enjoy the drive when you see it. If its your first 996, please drive a couple of others for comparison, even if they are the wrong spec/colour/gearbox/etc. You will then have a calibrated sense (bum) of what the power delivery, suspension and brakes, etc should feel like. At this age there can be quite a difference from a tight, well maintained car, and one that has had only the basics attended to and needs some work.

PS> Buy one!

Get them to email you a picture of the build sticker, located under the front bonnet (probably the same for your Boxster), post it up here and lots of people will decode for you. There are plenty of links here to decoders, but to be fair, some of the codes are context (year or base model of car) based, while others are fairly simple to decode. There are quite a few audio options, a couple of suspension options, various cold weather options and lots of seats, trim and electronics options. I have a few decoders here that extend to 5 pages each. Happy to email them to you, PM me your email address if you want to.

Have to agree with yo_clarkie on this one, try a few out just to get the comparison. Also try a tip and manual as you may be surprised (like I was) at how good the tip is (despite many purists saying otherwise!)

Suspension is the biggest culprit on a 10 year+ car, a couple of my wishbones and top mounts needed replacing, I decided to upgrade to the M030 and replace all the wishbones and top mounts and the difference was like driving a new car!

Good luck with your search!

Any options decoding from the reg or do you need the chassis number?

I would think only an OPC could tell you from the reg.

You can decode on the VIN, and the VIN can be found (at a distance) by HPI and similar etc from the reg (ie any via trader, and paid public services).
