Thread for ballcock and anyone else getting their screen changed.

Recently I had to get my screen changed for MOT. I'm in Germany and was travelling back for the easter weekend, so needed to get it done here first. I contacted my ins broker and they that Axa recommend Carglass (the Eu version of Autoglass). They said it would all be paid in advance. They also said that I could use another place but would have to pay it myself and claim it back. Carglass told me it was 1600 Euro and I didnt fancy the idea of things turning sour with Axa as I presented them with a 2000 Eruo bill.

So I booked the mobile Carglass people. 2 guys arrived and to be honest the way they worked was fine. As a decent home mechanic myself its easy to tell if people know what theyre doing. After 2 hrs they finished, I looked round...all seemed fine....I tipped them and sent them on their merry way.

A few days later however, I noticed that on the near side lower corner the finisher seal was just slightly dropping into the channel. On closer inspection from the inside I could see that there was more ceramic showing one side than the other. One digit was also slightly concealed in the window.

A call to Carglass and a short visit to one of their depos in Cologne and they booked another date for the screen to be refitted. 2 other gyus arrived (last Sat). They said they'd call me when they were done and I felt a bit nervous about leaving them with my precious car. 1.5hrs later I looked at the outside...all fine and just thought I'd get my torch to look from inside.....this is waht I saw.....

Pretty sweet huh!

I went ape!

Cut a long story short they asked to come back the following Tuesday to do it right.

So this time I watched them like a hawk as they used the cheeswire to get the screen out. He was struggling. He couldnt understand why it wasnt moving as he pulled harder. Enter me...to point out he was catching the wire on the visible VIN plate....and he'd damaged it!!!!!

[enter expleteives here....you can imagine]

They finally got the screen out and this is what feast was displayed for my sore eyes....

They said they would find out the next day what the leadtime was for a new plate, but I'm done with them!

I got in contact with my insurance broker, who got onto Axa and Autoglass's customer services. Forwarded the pics.

Told the broker (very helpful chap, David at Stuart Collins) that I dont want Carglass hacking at my car any more.

Waiting to hear back now.

Good, eh!

Car now sat un-driveable in garage since tuesday.

JP

PS...one more pic I missed if your eyes can take any more...

That's just unacceptable. Evil or Very Mad

I really can't understand why the windscreen replacement on a 993 is so expensive. I'm lead to believe that the cost of the glass is about £500 or 600 euros. So how does it cost 1000 euros to fit it? especially when it is done by such obviously low skilled people.
Am I missing something? Dont know Question

I'm the past, I must have had a dozen screens in almost as many cars. In one car I had three in a couple of months, all bonded, never any problems.

OMG...really sorry to see those pics.

You will need to get some paint around the screen to ensure rust doesnt come back, all sorts of things. Worth dropping 'Stocksie' aka Dan here a line as I think he has experience of a bad fit and an insurance claim.

You need a BIG payout for that.

Cheers for all your messages of support.

As you all say, the "work" is disgusting.

Yes, Chris, I'm on the case about the paint thing.

I'm gonna be stiring this up like hell next week.

Gutted really.

Show them the pics. Ask em to be careful.

Check the inside for squidged sealant. Before the stuff sets check that the screen is centered....run your finger under the outside seal to see it seats adequately all round.

Also, before they scrape the old sealant off ask them how they avoid scratching the paint and galvanised layer with their tools.

Hope it goes ok for you.

Great points indeed but a customer shouldn't be looking over someone's work to be sure it's done right.

I feel your pain pidders. Awefull. It's beyond me how they did that to the chassis plate.
