Hi All,

I hope you are all well.

I am thinking of exchanging my current car (Jag s-type, nice car but a bit boring :), used to own a boxster 2.7 before that, and before an SLK 230) to a 911 (preferably carrera 2), and I can pay up to 18K, so at that price I can find 2002 cars with around 50K on the clock.

What would you suggest that I do? Another option would be to buy a boxster s -much younger car around 2006-7 with the same money, but it is not the same car :).

Since I love 911s could you please advise on running costs and on what I should be careful? I know these cars are reliable in general but I would appreciate your opinions. Is 2002 a good year? What should I check and avoid?

many thanks guys!!

Cheers,

Thanos

Hi thanos,

I've got a 2002 car with almost exactly 50k miles on the clock and if it was for sale I'd happily take your £18k :thumb:

With an £18k budget you should be looking at a good well spec'd 2002 car with 60k miles max' and fsh, if buying privately. At this time of year you might be lucky and get one from a specialist dealer.

There's plenty of background reading on here if you go to the 996 forum and look in the FAQ section. If buying privately (and maybe even from a dealer)you'd always be advised to get a PPI done after you've checked out a likely car as best you can.

With regards to running costs, so much depends upon how near to replacement the typical consumables are. A PPI should advise you about this and you may be able to negotiate a lower purchase price accordingly.

You'll already know about Porsche parts prices but I don't think you'll find 996 bits cost much different to your previous Boxsters.

Fuel consumption can be 19mpg if pushing on and 30mpg+ if cruising. 21-23 is a typical average I'd guess.

Reliability of the 996 is often discussed and causes paranoia to all of us at times. The biggest worries are catastrophic engine failure due to IMS failure and major rebuild costs due to scored bores etc. Both these things do happen but it's a small (fingers crossed I haven't just jinxed myself) risk that most are prepared to take when you consider how many  's you get per £.

You'd obviously get a much younger, lower mileage Boxster for your £18k but (a) it'll never satisfy your itch to own a 911 and (b) you'll not necessarily have any guarantee that it'll be any more reliable.

Happy hunting :thumb:
